Review The Salted Plum - Singapore

Ren Kai Goh
Food were generally good but it's on the slightly pricey side. Unfortunately, I think the place is having some issues coping with it's new found fame. It was crowded on a Friday evening and we waited close to 30mins for the first dish to be served. While happy to see our food served, the dishes came relatively cold. They still taste good when it's cold but I'm sure it will definitely taste better if they are pipping hot. Top 3 recommendation from me would be the fried french beans, the Ru Rou and the fried oyster mushrooms. Didn't try the oyster omelette as it was sold out (by 8pm :(() Also, try to get a seat at level 1 as level 2 is way too noisy and stuffy.

We waited outside the restaurant for the service staff to attend to us. But it seems like we were neglected as it is Super packed inside. We were just right in front but they just can’t see us. I had to open the door of their restaurant so that they can go over to close it, and then I can frantically wave my hands at them to get their attention at last. So after that we proceed upstairs to be seated. We ordered almost everything from the menu. First came the drinks. Salted plum drink is awesome! Please try that! Maybe only that. The second dish was Lala and the oyster omelette. Felt they put too much pesto or a certain kind of spice for the lala and it was kinda overwhelmed. The lala were fresh though. But too greasy for me with the pork stuff inside. Oyster omelette was alright. Oysters were fresh and big and omelette were cooked just nice. Next came the fried oyster mushroom dish. It is fried and suppose to be hot right ? Nope it is cold as hell. To the extent I felt it might be ordered by someone else but cancelled and then got passed to us. The seasonings were good though! But that doesn’t make up for the cold mushrooms at all. Fifth dish was the MEI CAI. I thought that will be cold but nope it is pipping hot. Total exact opposite of that mushroom earlier. Mei cai is decent. Pork liver is okay. But a little too thick so it’s cold on the inside and mushy for some of them. Grilled pork belly with fried garlic bits- it’s fine. But in general everything was more to the salty side. Taiwan sausage patty were good. Can order that! The rice. The descriptions says: the shiny rice is drizzled with garlic and pork lard oil. But when it was served, it was just plain rice with a bit of fried garlic. Where is the oil? This is the dish that is suppose to be oily but there is no single drop of oil. As for other dishes, it’s like free flow of oil. And the rice is dry, no sight of any drip of oil. Pork Fried rice taste like plain rice with pepper and salt and colouring. No taste to it. Fried chicken was good too. Taste good. Tender and hot as it is FRIED. Herbal chicken is next. It lacks something. And too much dang gui and cooking wine. Too much that I think they didn’t get evaporated in time and thus the entire dish tasted off. Chicken is tender though. And ginger paste helped to elevate the dish. The fried yam with the good sign on the menu. It tasted like. Yam. Just yam. Not very sure what else is put into the yam but it taste just like normal yam. Some of them were fried till it’s black but still taste like just yam. No seasoning no nothing. It came with the sauce which also came with the pork chop. So I Guess it’s not specially for the yam. Not sure why is there a good sign. Pork chop is decent. Tender and flavourful. Can eat! The cabbage with bamboo shoots. Tasted decent. Felt like they all came from canned food. But it is better than most dishes. Beef belly. It’s just stewed need shabu. Taste meh. Cold cucumber. I LOVE THAT! It’s crunchy and refreshing. This is the best dish among everything. Not sure is it a good thing. To TOP it up, halfway through the dinner, a table requested to off the air conditioning and the service crew really did. And the place heated up after that. The place isn’t big and with so many people, it got stuffy and warm. When I requested for the air con to be switched on again after that table left, i was greeted with ‘orh’. Perhaps I was angry already so everything didn’t sound pleasant to me anymore, maybe I was bias at that time already. But our tastebuds will not lie. The above inputs were from what we felt. We were very disappointed especially when we saw it is one of the food king good restaurant recommendations. Overall, with that pricing maybe we can get more decent food from tze char. Portions were all very small as well for every dish. All in all, I will not pay $185.90 again in the future for the above food. Cheers!

It’s my 4th time at this place and I’m never disappointed! The warm and friendly Taiwanese staffs always value adds to my experience. Their burnt chilli chicken 2.0 is AMAZINGGG. Love that it holds a spicier kick than its former version, still has the same old char but more juicy than before too! I’d a make a reservation to be safe as it can be packed on certain days of the week!

Very unique Taiwanese cuisine in this super-dense restaurant area near Clark quay. The staff is quite friendly and responsive to our request and questions as this is the our first time here. Recommended the premium set which offers the most popular dishes here, good for 3-4 pax family.

Love the concept of this place. Order a range of small eats with different price ranges of $5 $10 $15. Try to go as a larger group theres more dishes one can try. The fried small prawns with salted egg was definitely the dish that stood out the most. The crunchy nibbles go perfectly with the beer. Every dish was a good portion and very flavourful. Bottled beer goes for a very good bucket price 5 for $50. Casual quick service. In the spirit of Chinese New year we even ordered a yu sheng. The service crew was very friendly and efficient. Salted plum has an outdoor seating and though it looks small from the outside it has 2 levels. Great place to hang will be back

Nice ambience and spaced out area, even at its level 2. Tried the $58 platter set. Food were tasty, with a few dishes such as the salt w/pepper squids gave the familiar Taiwan Night Market feel. Not shown in the photos was the dessert which felt like the jelly form of the bubble tea. Didn't had the stomach for any of second serving of rice or drink as was too full. Think the set was suited to be shared by 3-4 pax..

Modern Taiwanese porridge concept. All the dishes we tried were very good, especially the burnt chilli chicken and brussel sprouts. Food was served fast. Space is slightly small.

This is Taiwanese crusine at its best. Simple and delightfully crafted dishes that you cannot find anything similar elsewhere. Prices although are by no means cheap, you do want to go easy on ordering too much because at first the plates seem small, you'll realise later they do add up. I suggest going in a group (ideally of 4)so that you can have variety. Best of all the dishes is the bean sprouts pork mushroom. I can't explain the taste, y he sensation - you have to try. Free flow of rice is only for the plain white rice, not the $5 a BOWL silky rice which is lard flavoured topped with garlic bits.

[Update] I'll let this review stay so you know how excellent their recovery service is! We ended up having our long waited mee suas delivered to us to our office 1 day after the incident. The mee sua was something the entire bunch of us always wanted to try but they had been in R&D, so it was definitely a treat. Thank you all, the entire office enjoyed it. [/Update] First thing first, I’ve always enjoyed the food here for lunch, as well as the kind manager and staffs we have chatted with even before Salted Plum had their official opening here at Circular Road. However it has came to the knowledge that perhaps only lunch time was worth the visit. I’ve made a reservation for 6 for dinner tonight to welcome back a friend from overseas. Having had such great Salted Plum food and experience all these while, I was definitely hoping for a much better night. However it was definitely cut short when one of our friends got caught up with work (which I believe no one would have wanted), and the staff refused us entry for at least 3 times even when we had 5 out of 6 party. We also mentioned that we were going to start ordering while waiting since we understood that restaurant would not like patrons sitting around and not order/eat. Request was rejected as well and the staff insisted that full party has to be here (regardless of reasons), while we continued to wait 30-45 mins in hunger for our poor friend who was already stuck at last minute work. Note that it wasn’t full-house (2nd floor was entirely empty), and there were staffs free around the floor. Additionally, there was no notice whatsoever during reservation that full party is required and there will be no flexibility on it. I honestly had no explanation for my friends to have recommend them here in the first place. Perhaps we should have left, but since we made the reservation, we stuck with it. Food was good, there’s the only consolation. There was no other explanation or whatsnot, perhaps no one should have been stuck with work last minute. Manager once said during one of the visits, “You took care of us, and we would take care of you”, and I really do hope that such service could be rippled through the team. And if the policy is zero flexibility, perhaps it should have been warned beforehand on the reservation platform and we won’t be standing around in hunger like that.

I always finish my food too fast to remember to Instagram the shit out of it. Food is very well portioned and amazingly yummy. Not forgetting that charming bald guy with the glasses, extra 5 stars.
