Review Wa-cafe - Singapore

Soo Hin Yeoh
First opened in 1990 as part of CDL’s portfolio, Chinatown Point underwent a major refurbishment in 2011-12 after it was acquired by Perennial for $250M in 2010. Catering to the mid-tier market, it is an average mall with the usual casual dining outlets and cafes. On its top floor, there is a 1,000SQM library managed by National Library Board staffed by volunteers.

It's probably the swankiest mall here simply because the next two nearby malls were too old. Pre-covid this is like the China tourist magnet. And sitting on top of the MRT link, it probably saw the heaviest traffic and footfall coming and going through. There's even a Library on its top level, not much of shopping retailers to think about but large travel agents, loads of food tenants and some supplements stores and an NTUC. The main reason I always walk by is because of the underground passage to cross over from People's Park to eat at Hong Lim. This mall's rent is probably so inhibitive that if Bijin Nabe, Din Tai Feng can't make it here, not many can. Thus every six months you see many changeovers, especially with the food tenants, that easily make up 30% of the mall and more. One more good reason to come here is they have NTUC, Watson's and Guardian all under one roof, hence the best place to come buy your toiletries and compare prices. Other than that is to park comfortably and eat at Hong Lim's or People's Park as they have horrendous parking.

Mostly crowded but fun place to visit and do street shopping. We went in the late evening and could click some nice pictures. The street is always kind of decorated with some theme or the other. This one’s for the Chinese New Year 2022.

Like any other chinatown except this one being Singapore have the added feeling of being in a safe place plus it is clean though old already (I meant the place) but there is a better mall across the street which also a subway station. I’d figured out this would be a better place for the locals in getting their needs at a cheaper price but this is also a nice place to tour around just have the feel of the place.

Visited after Chinese New Year day on the weekday. It wasn't really pack during it. Waited till a bit dark to see the tiger decoration in the front of the mall. They have a quite number of decorations for Chinese New Year. The tiger decoration is big and exotic. This attracts visitor to come and look at it.

Went to have lunch today at the chinatown point branch, the omu egg rice is terrible, the rice is burned. Compare to the previous visit, the food standard drop alot.

I started coming when they first opened. Service has deteroriated I must say. I ordered Kaarage Chicken, after waiting for 30mins, I observed the staff preparing food joking and talking among themselves. When I checked, I was told my order was not even prepared! Huge disappointment!

I was there with my Girlfriend for lunch. We ordered omu rice and Japanese Neapolitan. Both dishes were extremely salty! We also ordered a green tea parfait which I think it's overly priced at s$13+. We definitely hit s$40 and above but was not given any lucky draw. The service was bad too as the staff was not alert enough to respond to the customers needs.

Had the worst matcha latte and iced matcha latte of my life - Akin to drinking warm/ cold milk only. Provided feedback and shocked that the staff added heaps of matcha powder into the remaining glass of ice matcha latte. End result.... gobbling down undissolved matcha powder in cold milk.

My review is only for the Chinatown Point branch. I started patronizing Wa Cafe at the Chinatown Point branch since they first opened around 2-3 years ago. Back then they used "free wifi, no gst, no service charge" as their attraction point. One would have expected no (or even bad) service since there was no service charge, right? But no! Their service was one of the best i had encountered in a restaurant. So naturally when they introduced gst and service charge, i thought it was fair enough as their service staff deserved it. Although I only went back once to Wa Cafe after they introduced the charges, i was glad to find that their service level remains the same. Keep up the good job! On the food front, i love their Omu Rice with Meat Sauce since day one and the standard of the food has not dropped since. The baked rice and the spaghetti are also my favourite! I also like the signature siphon Wa-Coffee and their Matcha Shake. Overall food is great and definitely the main reason why i get urges to go back again. It was quite sad to read many negative feedback on the Shaw branch in regards to their service level. I just hope that the Chinatown Point branch won't become like that.

Never again. The menu said "We will cater for vegetarian requests" (only reason i even went in) or something to that effect and when i did request, waiter said no they cant and i had to take the veggie curry. Only option. The prawn and scallop baked rice photos are inverted. My partner pointed at the prawn rice photo but was brought scallop. Seriously not impressed. Curry veggies were raw and scallop rice my parnter had was fishy and not tasty.

I must say this 5stars is only for the Chinatown Point branch. It remains my sanctuary for dessert and ogura toast. I was kinda secretly pleased that I had the chance to eat it before the long queues formed at the second branch in Shaw. I finally visited this branch a few weeks ago, and realised that they do not treat their customers the same way as their primary branch. Very odd. And why are they not affiliated to the 1st branch? I was not allowed to use the membership card at the Shaw branch? V odd right. I thought they might want to reward their loyal customers who liked them before it became a 'hipster-cafe' hit.

Very rich and authentic Matcha Latte.. restaurant boss selected from 20 different tea leaves back in japan to come down with such a good choice.. Omu rice is huge in portion.. great taste!! Baked rice is probably the highlight in their main course.. Come try!!!

Our first visit in early December was great. Maybe because the boss was around so the food was wonderful and my husband fell in love with the matcha latte. We came again today and this time we were greatly disappointed. We waited 45 mins for the first drink (coffee) to arrive. Subsequently we waited around 5-10 mins for the rest of our drinks to arrive one by one. My husband had been waiting eagerly to drink the matcha latte again but when it finally came, it was not as it was the first time. The matcha latte was diluted and there was no aroma of matcha. How they took around an hour to make a lousy cup of matcha latte really beats me. Service was also terrible. Our pot of tea came with only 1 packet of sugar and we had to ask for more. We also ordered the chocolate honey toast which they gave us knives to eat with instead of forks and we had to ask for forks. The only plus point today was the chocolate honey toast which tasted great. Hope it will taste as good if we ever come again.

I had an unhappy incident whereby the restaurant double-swiped my credit card. However Director Jun Fujieda san looked into the case and got his Manager Faisal to rectify the issue within less than a day. I am very impressed that despite being a large establishment, Watanabe is so personal about their customer service. Thank you and will definitely patronize again.

Drinks and desserts are on the expensive side. Tried omu rice and pasta, they were delicious. Service improved since Day 1.

Was quite disappointed, we reached around 820pm, ordered and a few minutes later told us last order 845pm and closing 9pm. Another family came later in later around 840pm, ordered food, served 850pm and was told they close at 9pm. As usual they keep asking to clear what ever thing customers finished. The other family was trying to finish their food in a hurry.

Super RUDE waitress who is apparently the SUPERVISOR of the outlet here at Isetan! Gave us a super black face and told us off that we are supposed to WAIT at the glass window until the waitresses/waiters are free to lead us to a table! Ridiculously, when we were waiting to be served.. not a single soul appeared in front of us! When we help ourselves to an empty table! The rude waitress appeared! WTH! Made my coffee break on xmas sucha unhappy event! Thanks Watanabe!

Terrible customer service, will never want to come back again. An Indian waitress (no racism intended, just stating fact) made my family and I waited for more than 30 mins for our order. When we approached her again asking her why we didn't get our order, she just told us that she did not key in our order into the system (or whatever is called to get the order to the chefs), and expect us to tell her what we wanted again, without even feeling apologetic at all. Didn't expect such lousy customer service from this kind of cafe. Please do something to improve your service standard and ensure that this won't happen again to other customers.
