Review Lagnaa...barefoot Dining - Singapore

Emma Ghani Lumb
I have been coming to Lagnaa since they opened a long time ago! Everytime I had friends visiting from overseas, Lagnaa was definitely a place where I took them to so we could enjoy exquisite Indian cuisine. I love spicy food and I love Lagnaa's concept of 'choosing your own spice level'! Now, I have been l living overseas for the past 9 years but everytime I come back to Singapore, I will bring my family over. Although some people might think that the food portions are small for the price, we feel that the portions are perfect! The price reflects the quality and we can try a variety of dishes without feeling overly full! Lagnaa will always be a place for me when I come home. What's even more amazing is how all the staff remembers me - even after a 3 year hiatus due to covid! That is how personal Lagnaa is - it is not just an incredible concept and restaurant - Lagnaa is the definition of home for me. Thank you Kesavan and team - we will always be back! :)

Lovely ambience and authentic Indian food.Chef Kesavan has a great understanding of ayurveda principles and made our food with outstanding perfection. Probably only place in Singapore were you can dine sitting on the floor in a true traditional way.

I usually never write reviews but this place was extremely expensive for less than average food, the 3 of us were very disappointed by our food (and the small portions). Also the service was too slow and it was too hot inside. It was uncomfortable to eat there.

The "Temple of Truth" for any real chili lover! 🌶️🔥 Test your chili skills and work your way up to the top! I love that the owners are truly passionate and serious about this. Carefully selected spices, blended and cooked to perfection! Yum!

Food quality does match the price at all. Ordered the Michelin set. 65 chicken is bad. All the curries are really below average

Still the same great food, still the same friendly staff. Haven’t been in a few years but thankfully those things haven’t changed. Highly recommended restaurant in Little India.

The owners of this place have so much personality. We interacted with all three and really enjoyed our time here. The food was delicious and the staff helped us understand which items went best with naan and which with rice. Everything was perfect. We couldn't go above 2 on the spicy scale. 1 probably would have been enough

Went with family to have dinner. We were excited to see that the Lagnaa got the Micheline Star. So we decided to have dinner at Lagnaa. We ate level six of spice and dare to win the challenge. And we all did it and put our names on the clip. Really enjoyed the food.

Where to start? Well we nearly missed it, it was along a side road along a raised raised pavement under an arch with, what looked like a wooden sign on the arch above our heads. Both have my wife and l were so glad we didn’t accidentally pass it.<br/>A very basic looking restaurant which as we had read and have now experienced belies the quality of its food. We were warmly greeted and ordered a couple of large beers as my, it was warm outside.<br/>After viewing the “Michelin Buddies menu” for two people, photograph attached we decided to go al-a-carte.<br/>So we ordered a Koli Curry Leaf Curry, Buttered Chicken, Palak Paneer, Dahl Makhni & a Buttered Naan with Kashmiri rice. The food was delicious, the Curry gently spicy (having been asked previously how spicy wanted it) the Buttered chicken nice and creamy, Dahl very flavoursome and the Palak Paneer very very good.<br/>All for 140 Singapore dollars. A veritable bargain.<br/>You will see by the photographs they are Michelin listed and are in fact for 2018 although not on the sign yet. Having also gained a well deserved 41/2 star rating.<br/>If in Singapore and liking Indian food give them a visit.

Arrived with a few friends, easily the best Indian food we ever had. The chutney appetizer was great, so were the Nans. Highlight of the dinner was the rice (take the 1st option, the expensive one) - just incredibly made and tender. The owner was also very kind and provided some info about Indian cooking.

*****Overpriced TOURIST TRAP*****<br/>A set menu for four pax was ordered which consisted of chicken 65,seekh kebab, daal, butter chicken, kadai paneer, fish curry along with roti basket, saffron rice and white rice.Additionally we ordered aalo palak and jug of plain lassi.<br/>The restaurant has a lower seating with chairs and tables whereas the floor above is exclusive for barefoot dining.Place draws large number of tourists seemingly from the reviews online. Also the ambience is surprisingly cosy considering the hustle bustle of Little India.<br/>The place misses on the food aspect while ticking all the other goodness.Chicken 65 was like onion bajji, veggie, chicken and fish dish lacked taste.Seemingly this place attracts tourists the spice levels are toned down. This is fairly taken but the Indian flavours are missing in the dish.<br/>Do not order the kulfi at this place as they aren’t of great quality specially the paan flavoured.<br/>The seekh kebab was decent overall.<br/>For the price the portion size is very small wish at lest they could have increased the quantity of rice.<br/>Overall this place is a tourist trap in name of barefoot Indian dining.

Lagnaa Barefoot is a tiny eatery on Upper Dickson Road in Little India. Housed in a gorgeous two-storey heritage-listed shop house, the eatery is separated into a casual section on the ground level and a more intimate setting on the upper level where diners are required to remove their footwear. <br/><br/>The eatery offers a small range of typical Indian food and the numerous translations on the menu suggest that this is a tourist trap (it is) and food is considerably pricier and much worse than other establishments in the vicinity.<br/><br/>My mate and I visited the Bib Gourmand restaurant after the vivacious Pongal harvest celebrations. We ordered several dishes including their tandoori chicken, curry chicken, garlic naan and saffron basmati rice. The food, in general, is one of the worst Indian food i have tried in Singapore. <br/><br/>First, the tandoori chicken, was blemished by an incessant use of tenderiser which altered and destroyed the texture of the chicken. The meat lost its juiciness, succulence and everything that makes it resemble a chicken. <br/><br/>Second, the curry chicken, is a hasty mixture of powdered curry rather than a painstaking build-up of spices. What I go was not a bouquet of flavours which was typical of Indian curries but an insipid and inauthentic imitation.<br/><br/>Third, the naan was atrocious. Where is the natural yeast/baking powder? The chef does not seem to be trained in making naans at all.<br/><br/>Fourth, soggy rice, any takers?<br/><br/>My dear Michelin guides, please get a proper inspector who has tried Singaporean indian food instead of going around and insulting cuisines which you have faint knowledge on.

This is the best traditional Indian food I had. I would recommend the yoghurt rice, lamb masala and spinach with cheese. Simply flavorful. The owner Kesavan is so friendly and passionate about traditional Indian cooking. Do catch him in a chat when here is less crowd. Two thumbs up!

We went to Lagnaa with the expectation of having a great Non Veg Indian cuisine and this place definitely serves some of the most ‘flavored’ and experimental Indian food. It was not a good hunt in Singapore as far as Indian meat dishes is concerned and we were fairly happy to find this outlet. A special mention should go for curry leave chicken which had a great taste with distinct flavors. The reason for rating this place as 3 is about the whole experience in this restaurant – very strange and unfriendly behavior of the owner. While we arrived 40 minutes before the closing time and also ordered food in quick 5 minutes – he still had to come to our desk and point out to his watch and say it loud that please order quickly as the place would be closing soon. “And if you have not ordered, then please leave immediately “– this is what we felt though he did not say it in words. We felt that we were unwelcome in this place while other guests mostly Europeans were busy ordering additional food and drinks. I realized that I had not read the reviews in the web nicely and it is clear now – that this place is reserved for Europeans and Western Expats. Others, especially Indians are not welcome here – please note!

Have been hearing about this place for the last couple of weeks and thought will give it a shot. What's more soothing to see is Zomato in Singapore. Welcome guys and hanging moved here from Bangalore, have been missing this for a while. #NotAnymore<br/><br/>The contemporary design, creativity and 2 level restaurants give you a blend of two different experiences for sure. Being from #nammabengaluru "Kingfisher nodbittu thumba kushiaaithu nannigey" which is "seeing KF Beer I felt very happy ;-)"<br/><br/>We were taken to first floor which I preferred and we were given small pillows or sitting cushions which was very comfortable. Was a good, different and must try experience. I could only see Caucasians and Guess they have already reached a large crowd of such people. Very nice. <br/><br/>The starter that was special for the month was Karuvapillai chicken which tasted pretty good, though was not served hot with no sides or chutneys etc. which was definitely surprising. The quantity could have been really better for the price of 20+ dollars including tax as it was very less. The butter chicken is a must try and is one of the bests I have had in Singapore and will return soon. The rotis, garlic nans and other breads tasted just like the way it is served in India. We went for spicy grade 4 of 6 which is a measure of spiciness each dish has. My Wife asked 5 and moderated that to 4 and still Had watery eyes. What we did observe is the spiciness surge had removed the taste completely off which is not good for a dish as the purpose is lost. The kulfis and Lassis are a must try as well. Wish I wrote about the #gulabjamuns as well but my 6 year ate the complete thing off which means it must have been tasty. I normally benchmark my gulabjamun reviews with #mastkalandar's who serve India's best Gulabjamuns. <br/><br/>I wanted to make a visit once again with my bigger family who r planning a trip to Singapore and will put an update.

After making reservations my husband and I headed towards Lagna for lunch on a saturday afternoon. Once we arrived, I was aware that though we booked to sit outside, we requested the lady (quite dark, short and on the heavier side) to have a look upstairs in the air-conditioning since it had gotten pretty humid with the sun shinning overhead. We went upstairs and there was one or two other tables occupied with a number of seating options to choose from. My husband has arthritis so he wasn’t to keen to sit on his haunches so I pleaded with him to take a seat here in the cooler room with a lot of difficulty I held his hand as he proceeded to sit on his haunches with his back against the wall. We thought we would then give our order to the next waiter that came up but no one came up for a good 15 minutes so I decided to go downstairs and give the order to the waiter directly. I have been a waiter myself for 2 years in Scotland during university and hence, am extremely polite to the people in the service industry since I’ve had my share of rude customers. I approached the lady once more and the conversation went something like below:-<br/><br/>Me: Hi Ma’am, we have actually taken a seat upstairs, is it possible for me to order some food ?<br/>Lady: No, but you said you only want to see upstairs. You can only order from here. <br/>Me: Sure. Thats fine. If you give me the menu - I’ll take it up for my husband to look at and then I can come back down to order the food with the menus. <br/>(At this point there was only one table occupied downstairs. So not like the restaurant was buzzing with people)<br/>Lady: No, you and your husband both have to come down to order the food. <br/>Me : He actually has arthritis so why can’t I be your waitress and go up and take the order and bring back your menus too ? <br/>Lady: No. No. You have to both come down. You said you were only going to take a look upstairs and now you want to order ? <br/>Me: ya, but now Iv’e come down to let you know that we would like to sit upstairs (Mind you, there were 5 tables available upstairs and there was no rush). So can we please proceed and do the ordering ? <br/><br/>At this point the head chef comes with the menus and says he would help me out. Its not a problem. So we begin walking upstairs and then the Lady rushes behind us and stands at the foot of the stairs and screams:- <br/><br/>Lady: Since, it is already so unpleasant I would suggest that you leave my restaurant. <br/>Me***Almost teary eyed*** : That is extremely rude and sure, we are happy to leave. <br/><br/>On the way out the head chef asked us to have a couple of drinks and apologised on the Lady’s behalf but this is easily the most shocking and insulting incident and I was already in tears by the time we walked out. In all of my years of visiting numerous restaurants all over the world I have never ever come across such horrible service. The management refuses to show even an iota of respect and flexibility for its customers. They should keep in mind that customers are the people that generate revenue for them. If you have a badly behaved customer you can justify being rude. But this lady’s bad behaviour, temper and lack of respect came out of no where. From the reviews I have after coming back this place is overrated as hell - FOOD IS BELOW AVERAGE, PRICES ARE ABOVE AVERAGE AND THE SERVICE IS SITTING SOMEWHERE IN THE GUTTER.
