Review May's Cafe - Singapore

Travel Writer
One of the oldest shopping centre in Singapore. Beauty world is like katong plaza of the west. The moment you enter, you will be greeted by a distinct musky smell which leads you all the way to the rows of shops on level 1 and 2. These shops are mostly tuition centres. If you are here, it would probably be because of giant supermarket at the basement or the food centre all the way up the top floor. There are some interesting selection of stalls by young hawkers on top floor and on level 1 there is May's cafe which sells your usual breakfast fare.

Interesting and you should visit to appreciate the early Singapore experiences, like Back to the future ("early day") found a nice drinking place " Wipe Out" with a nice view and good price for Guinness, Ashai $8 during Happy Hour. You can order food from other hawker stores and enjoy your drink!! There is no GST and definitely a must visit corner to chill and have a nice drink, enjoy the good company of friends and the nice view. Worthwhile and not to be missed!

This has always been my most reliable shopping mall. Has a McDonald's for breakfast stuff, lots of hairdressers, food court upstairs, tuition centres, many shops for utilities and a supermarket in the basement. And of course you can't forget the BUBBLE TEA. Thank you Beauty World Centre, very cool.

Hawker food - I love the dry Bak Kut teh. One of the nicest I had. Braised pig intestines and liver. Bunch of youngsters running the stall with super speed! Impressive!

Lots of local delicacy at the roof top of Beauty World. Special corner where beers are served in a open sky roof corner surrounded by orchids and catus. Local delicacy at one stop to fill your stomach like Satay Bee Hoon, Penang handmade Beef noodle, beauty world, mutton soup, durian Chendol, dumplings, fried porridge, vegetarian etc ....Korean and Japanese crusine are also available, must go!

Nice place to chill in. The lady boss is so friendly. Food is tasty too. But do check out the pricing before dining. Personally, I feel that it is not cheap 😄😄. But overall it is a good experience.

Third visit to the Jing Feng Bak Kut Teh. Their Wok Hei Kao Kao fried porridge is a die for comfort food. Best in rainy days

Old building. Carpark is extremely tight. Am not a seasoned driver. Had problems navigating out of the carpark and it wasn't my first time. Usually be here for massage. I do like the food court upstairs which has stalls serving relatively good food. The McDonald's branch is grubby though. Was there earlier and the garbage bin was packed to the brim with rubbish spilling out and some customers just left their dirty trays piling on tables nearby. Short staffed to clean up the place even though it wasn't peak hours

I really like the cosy, cafe atmosphere. Food is good and at good prices. Sometimes I think they are short-staffed. One particular lady staff was very curt with me today because I forgot to tell her it's take-away (tho she too didn't ask!)... tho I had quickly apologised. She kept muttering angrily. And I am a pretty considerate customer usually - I even help to return my tray and bowl! So I understand she was probably very stressed cos overworked. Still, it was a nasty experience. The rest of the staff are usually very self-controlled no matter how busy.

Standard of teh really deteriorated. Might as well sell water. Super diluted teh siu dai. Even when i went back to ask her to add tea from the pot directly, it was still bad. I derived that he tea in the pot is already diluted to start with.

This morning, my team and I were trying to purchase breakfast at May's Kafe. We have been supporting May's for many years. Our students and their parents have also been visiting May's to wait for one another in between lessons. May's Kafe business has been prospering. We are happy to see that the efforts of the business owner has paid off when the first year merely saw a trickle of customers. Unfortunately, the representing staff who tried to place the order was met with hostile service. She was riled at with offensive words and told to avoid being in their way of business. Subsequently, I found out from my teary team member that she had ordered a breakfast set and was trying to tell the counter staff that they had charged ala carte prices by the item. Cutting words spewed from the counter that she should not buy for the team and that she should get the team to come and buy food for themselves. In my opinion, service is an attitude. Good service should never be compromised. It is what brings in the customers and the dollars. Don't we all learn from our daily experience through the services we buy that the best way to lose customers is complacence? Hope this is food for thought for the management.

Keong Saik Road may be synonymous with alcohol, but it’s sure able to cook up a fine cup of coffee. At Kafe Utu, you’ll be transported to Africa the moment you step foot into the coffeehouse due to its wood and leather furnishing, as well as African-inspired paintings and portraits. The specialty house blend is called “Ubuntu” – a combination of coffee beans from Uganda, Mexico, and Brazil – whereby you could have it black ($4.50) or with some Hokkaido milk ($6). The food fare here is also excellent. Order up a Curried Avocado with Raw Garlic and Toast ($18) and Ricotta Hotcakes ($24) from the brunch menu or add on the Buttermilk Fried Chicken ($18), which is accompanied by homemade sauces of Congo Bongo, Fresh Mango Chilli Marmalade and House Chilli for an extra snack on the side.
