Review Matchaya - Singapore

Surprisingly empty on a weekend afternoon. Was craving for hojicha latte so popped by to give it a try. It wasn’t too sweet and texture wasn’t grainy. The other items on the menu looks good and will definitely come back to try next time!

Rating is only for mains as I did not manage to try the drinks and desserts that they are more well-known for. Was looking for a quick late lunch on a Sunday afternoon and saw that Matchaya was running a 50% off mains promotion. The place was full at 3-4pm with most people enjoying a chat over drinks & desserts. We chanced upon a table leaving and managed to get a seat. The food was rather disappointing but still value-for-money considering that it was on promotion even on a weekend (Sunday). I ordered the fish & chips for the matcha aioli and did not taste the matcha at all. The fish and chips itself was not memorable but it was at least decent. The beef stew was out of stock by then and hence we got the chicken stew instead and it looked very different from the menu picture (in the menu, it was dark brown and the dish served shows clear soup). I personally found the taste to be okay and think that it's a decent comfort food but my companion felt that it was "sick people's food" and did not like it that much. TLDR: Stick to what they are known for in future for the best experience

Quite a good matcha dessert place to chill. Located at the corner of The Cathay, there's limited seating so do visit during off peak hours if you would like to dine in. Matcha latte is pretty good. The dessert were well made too.

Surprised by how good the yuzu matcha cake was! I’m still craving for it! Will be back for it. Paired very well with their lovely hojicha and match drink! Very decent cake and drinks 👌🏻👍🏻 Barista and staff were very friendly and nice!

Had a quick bite in late afternoon.Ordered the ceremonial tea Koicha with milk (hot) and tamago sando. The matcha was good. Was slightly confused why the tamago was served in a croissant not in milk bread..as per the old menu.Tamago filling was great but I had great difficulty in cutting up the croissant to enjoy my meal in smaller bites. The croissant feels too thick to cut and the knife cutlery doesn't make it easier. Had also tried to eat directly by biting the croissant straight but was difficult to enjoy without spilling the contents. Perhaps they can consider to change to a fluffier croissant or stick to milk pan?

Pricey stuff but love the matcha desserts here. Slightly cheaper than hvala but a bit on the lighter matcha side. Still great though! Do get the matcha soft serve, it's our favourite! The don was alright but abit too pricey :0

Been there a few times for the food and drinks. I like the minimalist style especially the dashi stew and curry rice. The portion is not very big so it is good for small eaters. I love their sencha.

Ordered a chicken katsu sandwich, which was tasty. The chicken was crispy and juicy, and we t nicely with the tonkatsu sause and cabbage. The bread was light buttered and grilled and went nicely with the meat. My main gripe was that the fries were COLD, a major blunder in my books. It would have been a decent meal otherwise. Had the black sesame cream puff. The cream was thick and rich. The coux was soft, not particularly my favourite way to have puffs, but did the job. As a dessert, I think it was a little rich and may have needed some accents to break through the richness of the cream and sesame.

I had matcha mix with red bean soft serve with crispy butter cookie at the side. You could order $1 sauce to go with the soft serve but they ran out of red bean sauce to go with the soft serve. Maybe their business is too good that it ran out as I went close to 6pm. Anyway the matcha flavor in the soft serve is strong! It is better than the soft serve I ate at Tsujiri, their competitor. For the red bean soft serve, you could taste the red bean on the after taste. Combined together, I felt it was hard to finish at one go without a drink as the red bean and matcha are food that are rich in texture and taste that you need a drink to wash away the heaviness after eating the soft serve. However for the first few bite, I was already in matcha heaven. You could tell the owner are really passionate on serving the best matcha experience as they ask for customer feedback. I mix my soft serve with my Houjicha hot drink to make affogato. Surprisely it gave more sweetness to soft serve which I prefer. I love Houjicha hot premium coco. The Houjicha flavor is fragrant and it's not a flavor I see often in local shopping centre. The shop owner state that a shot of chocolate has been added to the drink though u can't see it if you order it in hot drink. It was so good that I had to buy the shop Matchaya exclusive blend, premium Houjicha late powder. All the ingredient are already mixed so I do not have to add in sugar. I just need to put my powder and hot water to enjoy my Houjicha drink. The Houjicha macaron was too sweet for my liking but the crispy exterior was delightful.

I used to buy the take-home tubs of ice-cream in styrofoam boxes. However, I found out today that your packaging has changed to the round, paper tubs which are not insulated in any way. I asked for foiled bags to hold the tub, there were none. The shop staff offered me a bag of ice-cubes but I am sure the bag will be dripping all the way home. In the end I had to change my mind about buying and asked for a refund. I think it makes more sense for the container to be heat-insulated since no ice-cream can withstand our hot temperature.

Great when they first opened with their only store in tanjong pagar but the standard has dropped. I pay a high price for mostly ice in my milk tea and added sweetener. I liked matchaya initially because it wasn't sweet. Becoming just like any other commercialised drink shop now that they've opened a few branches 👎

The service at the Cathay branch was efficient and attentive during my visit today. I got the hojicha milk tea, and it was clear that high quality hojicha went into it. I like that they provide a sugarless option. Why not 5-stars? Even though I asked for less ice, about half of the small cup was ice so the taste was quite diluted by 1/3 into the drink. I bought the hojicha powder to make a latte at home instead.

Hi, my friends and I made a special trip down to your Icon Village outlet on 7 Jan 18 afternoon for the Kyoho grape soft serve but we were disappointed to hear that it was sold out (and that was the last day). Would appreciate if you could inform customers beforehand on Facebook or Instagram about the stock availability so that we could avoid a wasted trip again, thanks.

I must say they open on the dot at 12pm and I felt like a stalker waiting till then...😂 I was spoilt for choice as everything in the menu looked tantalising. I tried the matcha softserve with azuki bean and also the Yuzu macaron. They were incredibly out of this world. DELISH and of top notch quality! Coming back very soon to try their Houjicha. Thank you Matchaya for bringing authentic Japanese confections to us "Japanese foodstuff" fans 😄

I won't say much because I hate to raise the bar and the anticipation. Some things you just have to try it for yourself. #supportlocal

I went to The Cathay yesterday just for the tea set but was disappointed due to out of stock for the swiss roll. It will be nice if you or your staff can post in the FB to inform customers that the swiss rolls are currently out of stock or sold out for the day to avoid disappointment (like me).
