Another one of my recent discoveries is this Jumbo Ayam Penyet($6.50)here! The chicken was seriously jumbo sized as seen and finishing the meal was quite the challenge😂 The chicken was fried to perfection with a crispy skin and juicy meat! The rice was fragrant and delicious too! Will definitely return whenever I'm in the area!
Between the Top Five Hawker Centres with the most Best Eats, Hong Lim, People's Park, Chinatown, Maxwell and Amoy, the last Amoy host most of the fusion eats at hawker prices. Though Amoy at peak lunch time is also the scariest. At 1pm, I had to walk around both levels for 20 minutes before I can tissue chope a single seat. Actually I was here for Han Kee's, but the queue went around the block. Thus decided to try this Ayam Penyet with a shorter queue. Took me a quick 15 minutes to get my food. Looks like a young couple helm the stall, everything looked neat and clean. Service was swift, courteous and efficient. When I received my plate of Classic Jumbo Ayam Penyet, the large quarter chicken looks huge. I took a picture with a packet of tissue for perspective. The plate may look messy and disorganised, with lots of crumbly fried bits and tearing the chicken apart could messed up the table. First bite into the chicken leg and I can tell they used fresh quarter chicken leg. A look at the pinkish blood residues on the cross section cut of the bone confirmed it. The chicken was juicy, succulent, flavourful and tasty. And that's a lot of chicken to eat. The accompanying rice is normal. The little bits of salad with Mayo doesn't do anything for me. The sambal was a little too sweet rather than spicy. But the chicken leg is truly the star of this dish. Though a note is that some parts nearer to the thick joint weren't too cooked through. It is quite normal for some pieces when frying large chicken quarters in large batches for otherwise if totally cooked through some part of the meat would be too dry. So it's just the luck of the draw of your piece, so just be a little careful when tearing meat nearer to the main joint. I am not complaining, there's a lot of meat to eat already. Tasty, juicy chicken over KFC anytime, just the quarter chicken leg set at $6.50 is superb value.
I just had the nasi ayam pengyet and i tell you.. it's life changing good!! Let's start with teh chicken - freshly fried L-shaped drum and thigh, skin was still crispy even tho i packed the food 10min before I started eating. Meat was tender and chicken not too oily. The rice was nicely cooked and you know how some food vendors just put a dash of veg on teh side to make it look healthy but no one really eats that? this stall actually put a little salad dressing on teh side so that you actually eat up your lettuce, carrot and cucumber mini salad. Lastly the chilli - how do i even start to describe this? it's just heavenly, not too spicy even for someone with very low tolerance and yet, it doesn't over power the entire packet of goodness. I have to come back again to try the noodles version, I heard it's even better!
Step aside Uptown and Mrs Hen, at $5.50, the Rayyan's Ayam Penyet is really a better option compared to these 2 rather popular stalls at Telok Ayer.
