Simply the best Peranakan cuisine that I've ever had. The food was fresh, every bite was deeply flavourful and clearly cooked with passion. We had the yam cakes, pork belimbing, ayam buah keluak and ikan sambat, no dish was anything less than perfectly flavoured and spiced. Utterly memorable.
Chef Ben was very kind when he took our order, recommending the dishes that went well with each other and even telling us when we had ordered too much.
Delicious. I can't describe it enough to do justice; the pork belimbing melted in my mouth with the tingle of chili spiciness and the unique spike of sourness from the belimbing. The yam cakes were crispy on the outside, melty on the inside with that hae bi flavour and perfect with the sambal. One point that is often taken for granted; their white rice was well made enough that I noticed its firm bite and just the right amount of chewiness.
Chef Ben is a lovely gentleman, like a kindly old uncle he explained how Peranakan cooking is a heritage he treasured and feared was dying out. He also shared how he wished he could share his recipes but couldn't as his cooking was developed from years of practice and experience till he did it from sense and aggaration alone.
Peranakan Flavours is in an out-of-the-way spot of Arab St area, in unremarkable premises, but totally, goddamn, worth hunting for.
