The better half and I had the opportunity to savour this unpretentious tasting menu yesterday. As far as this tasting menu goes, it is affordable (at $49/ pax) and introduces new perspectives on familiar foods such as bak kut teh etc.
Notwithstanding the off-beat location in a ubiquitous industrial office type building, this is a gem that has managed to bring in the crowds largely with the power of the word of mouth. Key highlights had to be the chap chye salad (heck of a belachan mayo there) and the trio of bite sized appetizers (ever had ayam buah keluak in a crisp wanton skin?).
Lest we reveal too much, this is a menu worth making the trip down to CT Hub for. What clinched the deal for me personally was that this dinner was similar to the chef inviting you into his home for some quirky takes on his traditional favourites. His, his wife and (probably daughters) hospitality made it so comfortable. I especially liked the way he took pains to introduce each dish and the inspirations behind it. Now that's a local dining experience worth supporting.
When you gather with 12 friends, some you have not sat down for a meal for more than a decade, how do you juggle with eating & meaningful conversations? The degustation dinner Snack Culture last night was an excellent social-hang, given the time between each dish allows for 'what's up' catching up and the bite size gives you a polite mouthful.
The 9 plates provide a great n interesting addition to the conversation too! You have traditional dishes presented with new perspective yet respecting the flavours ( here I cite the Scottish egg aka Ter Kar Chor). The drink list is comprehensive & extremely reasonably priced.
You go with an open mind and leave with a inspired appetite, a happy tummy and a wholesome soul, knowing the 9 dishes did not burst your diet nor the wallet.
I would also recommend for date nights or couple time as the 9 plates is served at a comfortable interval giving sufficient time for conversation and little for awkward silence.
Kudos to the chefs, young crew & the brains behind this wonderful gastronomy adventure.
The bento box concept of 'pick what you feel like' is awesome. Healthy eating at its best. Nothing tastes "healthy". Even chicken breast can be tender and flavourful. Kudos to the chef! Did I mention I don't eat chicken breast? And the quinoa fried Yangzhou style - That's a religious experience! I love it! So uh that I went back and bought the frozen ones to bring home to extend my gastronomic pleasures! Yums!
