Review First Street Teochew Fish Soup - Singapore

Above average bowl of fish soup for around $7 with rice. Came here 2 years ago and kinda recalled there were more ingredients in the soup. Now it’s just lettuce and fish. Bitter gourd is an extra $1 option. However, the crazy queues seem to have disappeared and I got my meal in less than 15 minutes. The fish was still soft and well cooked and there was a good portion. Overall not too bad but a little pricey still. I would prefer if they had more of other vegetable such as tomatoes that’s included in the soup.

One of my favourite places for fish soup. Havent been here for some time and noticed quite a lot of changes. The shopfront has changed quite a bit and it looks bigger and better pictorials of the dishes. The system for getting the fish soup is now more efficient you don't really get long queues, maybe also because they have opened another branch. Also used to be able to eat at the same coffee shop across the street but now they don't allow, so the same coffeeshop selling the Teochew porridge can sit 5 pax but the original coffeeshop can only sit 2. Perhaps also not a good timing to visit during the CNY weekend, the types of fish available was also quite limited. Nevertheless was quite okay with the selection and ordered a mix of batang and toman, which of course I really enjoyed the batang better. Good place for fish soup, though no aircon is always the downside for having something hot on a hot day.

All dishes comes with lettuce default. Communication from cashier wasn't clear when asked if bitter gourd is included in the soup. The batang slices are overly salty, albeit the flesh is smooth and soft till broken into its own flake piece. The soup itself is also overly salty and VERY tasty. The fish balls are nicely done, less salty. 4stars for the quality of fish slices, a pity the soup and the fish seasoning is overpowering and salty 😔.

The place has limited seats which is a bit of an issues. When it rains then GG because you'll be wet (thats what he said) no matter where you sit. The soup is clear and good and great for a cold day (Add more pepper and garlic). The fish are fresh and meat is firm. I had the red grouper/snapper, which went well with rice, soup, and chilli in the morning. Price wise, its expensive. 1 bowl of normal fish noodle soup can go up to $5 in a hawker centre, 1 plate of chicken rice about $3. Here... 1 bowl of fish soup and a bowl of rice here would be $9 at the very least. If you order a drink, thats another $1.80 for Teh C Ping. My verdict, nice to have every now and then but its comparable to other cheaper fish soup noodles/rice. Nothing too special or fanciful.

Been a year since COVID and it is great to be back. Found the place nicely renovated with better flooring, more staff, ceiling fan and more staff to boost. There is a still a queue when we are there but not as long as before, maybe because we are there quite late at 11am. Quality wise, definitely the batang fish is still best - for me cheap and good. Loved the fact that their fishes are very fresh - slightly sweet and savory if you dip it into the light soy sauce (tips). Tip #2 - always add extra 80c for the ba chor (minced meat). The soup - not your typical milky kind but the ones that are cooked with dried sole fish (you can even taste the powder bits of it in the soup at the end). This is the type of comfort food I love. Simple, flavorful and flavors are just right. Forget about adding lobster, scallops etc. Sometime, simple is key - as they have the freshest ingredients and have been cooking this for decades. This can't go wrong.

Fish soup was very salty based on my personal opinion. The batang fish meat is fresh and nice.

Freshest batang, or mackerel fish soup. Skin from the fish is skilfully removed, resulting in a pristine bowl of soup where pearl-white fishes slices are the highlight. 🤪 I added the giant sized fishballs and minced meat into the soup sweetened the whole eating experience.

Hi, can we have a queue system, so that we placed our orders get our Q number then can wait for our orders to be collected or served while sitting. I noticed a lot of elderly fan beside me who love eating their fish soup. Elderly cannot stand in queue for too long as the waiting time was 1hr+. Hope they can have such queue system so that the customers especially the eldery do not need to stand in queue for too long. Thank you.

I love the generous portions and the fish maw in the mixed soup. The teochew in me approves of it tremendously-enough to queue an average of 30 minutes each time I go there!

The ranked number 1 (in my heart) fish soup in Singapore. A must try!
