Review Jalan Sultan Prawn Mee - Singapore

Came to reminisce my young times 20 years ago, when it was an every Sunday's staple food for my family. An eatery facing an inner road (i.e Jalan Ayer). Plenty of seats at the time I arrived about 1pm+, on a mid weekday. Note they're closed every Tuesday! Easy to reach location, just diagonally across Kallang MRT Station. From memory, food prices has gone up certainly (damn the inflation...) - check out my images uploaded for the price list. There's "Wu Xiang/五香" as from the old days too - I had 2 prawn crackers/1 squid/1 guanchang/ 1 fishpaste you tiao, that totalled up to $10.50. My $6 bowl of prawn pork rib noodles is good, just enough a portion and the soup base is pretty strong and more on the salty range (which I'm cool because that what I like). It does seem like there's a change in the taste but I cannot pin point at... But overall, its still good. Oh yeah, observation: lots of elderly come around to makan here!

Though is been many years since I last ate here but the standard still same. The soup is so rich in flavour and sweet/savoury at the same time. Tried the pork rib prawn noodle soup sprinkler with the chilli powder and cut chilli. Omg a satisfying lunch.

Be careful of bird droppings if you’re sitting outside… and it’s so so hot drinking hot soup in the insane sunny weather. Prawn mee and soup are good and pretty tasty but downside is portions are fun sized for $6/8/10, large is the new normal

With a style the polar opposite of my favourite #dadongprawnnoodles is my second favourite - #jalansultanprawnmee. I know, I know - it must sound odd seeing how different they are but it is in what sets them apart that has me enjoying the latter’s prawn noodles too. Significantly more potent in prawn power, the darker yet clearer soup of Jalan Sultan Prawn Mee lacks the rounded mouthfeel of Da Dong’s silky opaque broth (which is why I am always torn between ordering the dry and soup versions there). But like Hemingway’s writing - terse and direct, this eatery’s is all about singing that singular note of crustacean. At least, that is my impression. And also why I prefer the dry version here because having a small bowl of their prawn-y soup is enough. What really draws me is the tangy-spicy chilli used to toss the noodles - it has an old-school taste which I have a soft spot for. Needless to say, the prawns, served halved for easy eating, and pork ribs, are faultless. A bonus about dining here is we can order a plate of Ngoh Hiang as well. All the usual suspects are offered at the small stall but it also has a couple of unique items like the UFO-shaped patty which tastes a lot like the Hokkien Fried Oyster Cake but is softer and mealier within. I love their chilli dip too - it is a complex number with raw garlic and sour plum mixed in.

$8 for this portion, a little pricey for 3 halves prawn & 3 small pork ribs. Nevertheless, the soup is really thick with unami taste with a tinge of spicy-ness.

Jln sultan old school prawn mee, serve in thick broth keeps its returned customer. 2 choice of prawn, King prawn or sultan prawn. Else, go for Pig tail -which is tender & juicy melt in mouth.

The soup based prawn mee is worth a try. Small prawns are sweet. As for big prawns, it's not bad. Among the top 5 for soup taste.

The prawn is very fresh and soup is very tasty. Keep up the standard from my last visit 4 years ago.
