If you want some authentic hainanese style western food, this humble family eatery should definitely be on your list.
I have been here many times and it's still my family's favorite place for the amazing food, service and the price.
While they are famous for their Ox Tail, which is my dad's favorite dish and he ordered anyway, I ordered one of their newer item on the menu, the Rosemary Lamb Shank. I can't fully stress how soft and tender the meat is; I simply just need a fork for the meal. It's just so juicy and the marination speaks length for the arduous preparation process.
One of the things I really like about this place is the hospitality. Even before you start ordering your food, you will be warmly greeted by the staff and ushered to your seat. You will also be immediately attracted to the surroundings filled with stuffs of the previous century.
Lastly you will be extremely pleased to hear that they DO NOT charge extra GST and Service charges. If you are in Joo Chiat area, you should definitely try this place.
Visited this lovely diner on Friday with my family.
A perfect venue to enjoy good food and a walk down memory lane with their very unique setting. From gramophones to old school decor, ideal for a little show and tell. Great fun for different generations.
Food was superb, highly recommend everyone to try their beef stew and hainanese pork chop.
We had a good chat with the owner, probably one of the most down-to-earth person I have ever met.
A feast both for your eyes and taste buds, it’s a MUST HAVE!
♡ the folks there. ♡ pork ribs. ♡ fries. ♡ french onion soup w the garlic bread. ♡ clam in white wine. We also had the rosemary chicken, portabello mushroom w cheese n bacon, apple crumble w ice-cream, lemongrass drink, beer x 3, hainanese porkchop. Haha think the staff were shocked by the amt we ate! :p will be back!!
Ours was a big group. There was another big group when we were there on Friday, 22 Sep. Loved the ambience! We ordered two of everything that they are well known for .... yummos ... did not dissapoint! On that night, only found my Ox Tail a tad salty but I have no reservations about ordering it again albeit telling them to be mindful of the salt! Street parking is limited ... however, there's ground HDB Gantry parking about 80m away!
Will definitely come again (and again) with friends and overseas guests!
I have written a review on the newly introduced Wah Eng Beef Noodles to the BritisHainan menu. Frederick has my permission to reprint it on this website to share with readers and fans of his electic.....perhaps avant garde 'cafe' would be the right word to describe this unique f & b place. Its like nothing i can compare with in the context of Singapore.
Super yummy food and friendly staff in a super old school setting. Just tried their Hainanese beef noodles and it's certainly the best I ever had so far!
A cosy place to have dinner with family. The owners are very friendly and really provide excellent service to make us feel at home. The food is very tasty and nice too. Will recommend this place to those who wish to enjoy a cosy time with family and friends.
♥ Friendly staff greeting with the slogan of "welcome home!". Constantly looking after our well-being. It was simply more than just a dining restaurant/museum, the ambience you will get is just like home. Awesome! The owner actually plays the victrola phonograph (do not need electricity; could be played just by turning to create tension;kinetic energy for the long playing record to spin and by putting the stylus, music can magically plays) for me and it was an eye-opening experience! Really awesome it literally sounds like someone is directly singing right in front of me! Great experience, delectable dishes with NO MSG yet tender juicy and flavourful!!!! Will definitely go back for more. ♥
I went there with my wife and son for our Christmas Eve Dinner, both me and my wife are Hainanese, so the boss-Frederick Puah make us feel like we are home. My son got their Signature Dish: Oxtail Stew, my wife got the bake Salmon and I got the the Hainanese Pork Chop and Gourmet Sausage sets. This dinner and the atmosphere brought us back to the oldies. It is a great place to catch up with old friends and relatives with great food. Frederick promise to bring back some of our old Hainanese dishes and keep the great western sets on his menu. Will definitely be back to catch up with him and the Signature Lamb Shank that is not to be miss.
One of the best meals I had and the best oxtail in town. Great service and lovely location
Hi Fred, thank you for your hospitality. We love the good food (baby back ribs, beef stew, portobello mushroom) and most of all, we enjoyed your sharing and the entertainment (both from yourself & the guests). Please keep it going and we will certainly drop by again with friends. We wish you good health.
Recommend the oxtail stew and pork chop. Lovely deco. Parking is a bit of an issue - can park at nearby HDB and walk over.
An authentic taste of traditional Hainanese pork chop, beef stew, lamp shank, beef noodle and curry rice with British influence I supposed.
Very unique dining place in my view and the food is not bad. I love the pork rib especially. Would recommend if u r trying to find a special place to dine.
Here to takeaway, nice old school restaurant. Not a lot of space. It’s a old shop house. Friendly staff
MUST TRY!!
The food is superb! The vibe is very cozy and Uncle Freddo is very entertaining to the guests. Plus he has a beautiful voice. I recommend asking him for a demonstration.
We tried the steel oxtail stew and the curry rice. We ordered a lot because we were a big group.
Uncle Freddo is only in this restaurant, so make sure you plan accordingly.
We also reserved the day before. And we sat in the western room because it was a bit quieter than the Red Chinese room. Both rooms have nice vibes!
Food is extremely good, authentic and traditional. Will come back to try other dishes. I only tried the beef stew and pork chop for mains.
Only con is that the beef stew had a lot of fats, not much meat and considering that it cost almost $30, would have expected more beef meat instead of fats.
We have been here a couple of times and live the beef noodles and lamb shank, even oxtail soup is great. The place is welcoming with friendly boss but the service staff quality can be improved ( except the young man , he is good). The only setback is the coffee doesn’t meet the standard of Hainanese! My grandpa and dad will be disappointed! Dessert was just average
A small step down memory lane.
The interior is filled with objects and furniture of the years gone by which give a comforting sense of nostalgia.
Food is great and fairly priced, the baby back ribs are of a special note along with the pork cutlet.
Service staff is friendly and the owner is a very sociable man who takes time to visit the tables to check in with his patrons.
Great ambience for groups.
