Review Folklore - Singapore

Khanh Ngo
Folklore serves traditional Eurasian and Perakanan dishes and is on a quest to keep thr Singapore food heritage alive. The dishes we ordered were super tasty and the service was top-notched. Highly recommend!

Came here with visitors from overseas as wanted to show them some heritage nyonya food. There were three of us and we ordered a total of 5 dishes (way too much, but the waiter said was managable. Strike 1 when they convince you to overorder). We had the buah keluak fried rice ($28++), the seafood otak ($22++), the beef cheek rendang ($36++), four angle bean salad ($12++) and the sayur lodeh ($16++). The dishes worth mentioning is the fried rice, seafood otak and the four angle bean salad. The beef cheek was disappointing, the serving was large but in one giant lump and minimal gravy. It was tender that you could cut it with a spoon but not so tender that it falls apart. Also the lack of gravy was disappointing, even asking the waiter for more gravy and was told this is already served in portion (strike 2). The sayur lodeh was a serious let down. Don't order this!! The jackfruit seeds inside the curry had this hard thin casing that was inedible. The taste was just average. For the price you pay, I would rather take overseas visitors to violet oon. Ambience is better. Food is way better. Service is tops. And it's only a little more from a price point. Total bill at folklore around $50 pp. Guess I'm not coming back.

It is a rare occasion that we celebrate the success of a modernised Peranakan cuisine. But when the first taste of Buah Keluak fried rice filled my mouth, the taste was divine. The rich cocoa like aroma filling the entire palate and leaving us craving for more. The fried aubergines were crisp and so soft it almost melts. The service was genuine craft. Most of the dishes were able to capture the essence of Peranakan cuisine and therefore it deserves a thumbs up and 5 stars. The food is worth a visit especially if you love local cuisine.

Fix of Malaysian, Indonesian, and Singaporian cuisine. Most dishes are spicy and with strong flavors. Many curry dishes. Pretty good but might be too spicy for some people. The slow cooked beef cheek rendang is really awesome, strongly recommended.

Restaurant serves good peranakan food - highly recommend the otah, beef rendang and ayam goreng. For desserts, try the kueh kosui and tapioca cake with ice cream. Ambience is casual and comfortable and service is fine. Can get a little noisy when crowded but otherwise a decent place to eat.

Amazing peranakan food however the dishes were either hits or misses. Good: Salted duck soup with lime juice and chilli padi, 4 angled bean salad, beef cheek, black nut fried rice Misses: Otah, Singgang, kuay chap (too salty) Service was very weak and slow on this day, with only 2 pax running the floor. Also all cocktails were not available and we were only informed after ordering. Yes, I would return but not anytime soon.

Heard so much about local Chef Damien D'Silva's heritage creation and decided to visit this place with my family. Being a 皮蛋 fan, the Chilled Tofu with Pidan is a winner. The tofu is smashed up together with century egg, radish and scallion and served chilled. Generally the food are pretty good except for a few dishes which we find it quite salty. Overall the dinner was a pretty good experience.

If you love Peranakan, you have to try this restaurant!!! Every cuisine is uniquely rich in flavour, tangy, aromatic and spicy. Savour every bite and feel your taste buds waking up from hibernation! The Kueh Bengkah with ice cream is a ten! The sago dessert would be heavenly if there was more gula melaka.

We had sambal buah keluak fried rice, really yummy that we had thoughts of ordering another. Ngo Hiang was tasty & fresh. Seafood otah we fought over it, yes honest, we did. Angled bean salad was refreshing with well balanced dressing. The chap Chye was good value for money & I could just have eaten that with sambal belachan & rice. The sorting masak hitam was another dish we scraped the gravy to last bit. Overall nothing disappointing at all. All dishes were fresh & no heat up, microwave feel. We all voted to come back again & again. Only snag was the aircon not cold enough or probably the lights are hot ??? If place can be tad cooler, one would eat more. Otherwise, yes definitely worthy of a trip to Beach Road. Oh, kueh kosui is another I would definitely buy seconds. Great experience. TQ !

When the kitchen operations and service staff are not aligned, no matter how good your food is, it's a horrible dining experience. Service was dismal and food was average. For the kind of price you charge, diners expect some form of service and excellent food, however both were sorely lacking. Lots to improved on. For now, not a place I will recommend to anyone I know.

Long, long wait for my food, although the waitress did warn me. But when the food came - aberjack, singgang, buah keluak fried rice, tofu-pidan, they were some of the tastiest food I'd ever had for a long time. Despite the burgeoning crowd, each dish was impeccably prepared. Kudos to Chef Damian.

The Chinese New Year menu was a buffet with no a la carte option, priced at $68++ per person. The spread was so miserable with about 7 dishes which were barely warm, 3 soups and a few kueh for dessert, and the flavours were lackluster. A huge disappointment since we’d gone as a group with a friend from out of town because of the article recommending it in the New York Times. For $20 more we could have had a huge spread at a five star hotel! Super disappointing and won’t ever be back.

Husband and I are both big fans of Peranakan food so we had to bring our foreign friends to try some too! First time at Folklore and we'll definitely be back again. Special mention to the buah keluak fried rice and winged bean salad. It would be a sin not to take away the leftovers!

After watching Crave prog, my family & I gave it a try. To our disappointment, the kiam chye duck soup was not even worth $30. The soup was bland and garlic shouldnt be added. Even those selling at food court, were much better than this. Sambal belachan and ngoh hiang tasted dry. Too many chilli seeds were found on the belachan and lime should be added to it. All the dishes were not even piping hot. And we dont understand why we need to wait 25 mins for all dishes. We believe that all dishes are pre-cooked. This will be first and last visit for us.

A big group has its advantage !! We virtually tried everything on the menu,.... and it was great. Hats of to Chef Damien. Being a Peranakan, I am very hard to please , as my mum had already set such a high benchmark. But I think my mum will give this place a stamp of her approval . The dishes were of high quality, largely from the fresh ingredients used. Spices were distinct and aromatic! Will certainly come back for more!

Though the food is unique, it is unfortunate the service is disappointing. When we feedback on the hard plain rice, the waiter gave us a questioning look and the manager insisted that rice is ok. They are just not listening.

The cuisine looks traditional and yet it is different. Different in a good kind of way. I think it is a combination of Peranakan and Eurasian. The ambience is great for small numbers to a larger group. There are definitely more that I want to try on the menu and the dishes that I saw being serving on neigboring tables. There is a price premium that I am willingly to pay, Will not be a place that I would go that regularly. When I want something a little special, I am sure Folklore will come up to my mind!

Party of 3 including my MIL who is a great nonya home chef herself .. disappointing for her. Somehow we felt the plain rice was partially uncooked but the chefs insisted and think otherwise, i think Damien will be disappointed. Bye for us.

Great tasting dishes, especially the very, very memorable Aberjaw - you can really taste the effort and understanding that Chef Damian and his team put into the execution of each item on the menu. Service standards match the quality of the food. Will be back. For me, Folklore is definitely one of SG's most exciting restaurants to watch at the moment.

Brought my Mother who is a 90 year old full fledge Peranakan Bibik and my 2 Aunts who are similar and also maestros of their own kitchen gave their seal of approval to the food. We ordered a fair bit but unfortunately the Beef Rendang has finished. It is not often my Mother & Aunts would be this favorable to any Peranakan eatery. So this place should feel truly privileged. Compliments to their sambal belacan also. The dessert was also approved. We tried the Sago, Custard, Kway Ko Swee and the Kway Beng Kah. Understandably the food is prepared fresh upon order, this unfortunately meant a lengthy wait time. One of our chicken dishes only arrived when we were in the midst of munching away into our desserts. Which we had totally forgotten also which we turned away obviously. If they are able to quicken their preparation process then this place would be a near faultless recommendation on my part.

Just awesome. Every single dish was good and already counting down to the next visit!

Great food, but atrocious service and completely unacceptable waiting times. We were seated at 12.45pm, ordered at 1pm, but only received our food from 2pm to 2.30pm. Would not go back there again.

We've been sitting here for 45min, and there is no food. Granted that it's during Sunday lunchtime, but no one warned us about the long wait time. It's not just us. They are also out of their star dishes and it's been that way since Saturday. Strongly recommend to avoid until they get their act in order, or go during off peak.

Food was good. Staff lack initiative. When asked what is the Happy Hour promotion, the response was “Not sure.” And so asked the staff to check and he never came back! Such a shame.

Sinful! So wanna return soon to tuck into Damian's Sambal Buah Keluak Fried Rice, Tofu with 皮蛋, Beef cheek Rendang, Singgang, Otah (OMG!!) & Chap Chye. I forgot to order the soup, damn!
