Review Soon Soon Teochew Porridge - Singapore

KLKK
I used to patronise this Teochew Porridge quite frequently until the change in owner/crew a few years ago. Back then the price was affordable. The previous crew is running a shop at Serangoon Road. The standard has been the same and the food is still nice. I would not say the price is affordable for all dishes. For example, one piece of Otah is S$6. It really depends on what do you order.

Had late dinner here last weekend. Parking is a challenge. Had to park 2 lanes away and walked over. Food wise, tasty! Especially the hae bi hiam. Love it! Fish cakes a bit stale though, maybe we came too late. Sits 5 per table.

Looks good but not truly up to mark. The most important ingredient of teo chew porridge is the "kiam cai"... it has to be salty, it has to be very soft, it has to be "melt in your mouth" but it didn't meet all those qualities. The prices were also not affordable. Especially the squid because they would simply charge you whatever price they felt like it. Nope... i wouldn't recommend this teochew porridge...

Hougang and Kovan is probably well famous for their Teochew Porridge given the rich Teochew history of this location in SG since the early 80s to 90s. Soon Soon Teochew Porridge is my favorite and most frequented porridge stall within the vicinity - simply for its affordable and quality dishes. You might have heard of other outlets charging outrageous dollar amounts for certain dishes but Soon Soon is consistent not only with their prices, but also quality of each dish which they produce in fresh batches for lunch and dinner. My usuals are the Sweet and Sour Pork, Otah, Long Beans, Fried Egg, Ginger Chicken, and tau pok/tau kwa. You can pair them with a warm bowl of porridge during rainy days (great comfort food for that weather!) or just a bowl of rice. Seating capacity is decent. Place is also well-ventilated. Service is extremely quick. 5mins walk from Kovan MRT as well. Super convenient! Parallel parking available right outside the store or opposite at Heartland mall.

A frequent haunt for porridge that isn't too crowded and is located not too far away from places that I can park. There is a decent variety of dish choices, but I really prefer this place for its convenient by car and the quietness of its location since it is not directly by the main road. The food is not too pricey especially when sharing and there queues are usually quite short. The duck dish is my usual go to.

Food was not nice, not many variety to select and the worst was very bad customer service & rude service by the old woman. Will never patronise again and advise customers not to patronise this Soon Soon Teochew Porridge store!!!

Edited: Unfortunately, like some other reviews have pointed out - it seems that the price does fluctuate even with the same usual dishes that I’ve ordered. So this definitely hampers my intention of going back as often, hence the reduced rating. But I must say this - after a round of trying all the Teochew Mui in Kovan area, I think this stall served the most palatable array of dishes out of the lot. Their food is also not overly salty nor oily. If you wanna eat clean, you can definitely come here. Previous review: Rare old school Teochew porridge joint in Kovan. So far, I’ve probably ordered the usual food items and it’s quite reasonably priced. Has both rice and porridge options. Dishes have the 古早味, though a bit salty (and possibly a good idea to balance out with the porridge :D). Have seen both the young and old dine here, place tends to get crowded during meal times. Will come back again 👍🏼

Ordered so much food with my friends and it cost $31.80, which was pretty worth it… Food was really tasty, and the vegetables (especially the french beans) were very well-executed. :-)

One of my Favourite places to eat and easily one of the more authentic Teochew porridge you can get. Cooked and served by majority local staffs, family owned and operated... Things to eat: 1. Sliced duck meat 2. Fish head, sells out real quick and a hidden gem 3. Squid with sweet sauce
