Review Ponggol Seafood - Singapore

My father-in-law was diplomatic in reviewing the dishes, saying we had not ordered their signature dishes.. so it is our fault the food did not live up to expectations! The restaurant documented its origin from the old Punggol Point so that's a plus for nostalgia seekers like us. That's the reason for a 4-star in term of atmosphere. Unfortunately, the dishes had not evolved. The most disappointing is the fish head curry in claypot. It is difficult to screw up on such an iconic fish for a seafood restaurant. The curry soup was atrocious.. too salty and lack punch. All of us who are regular fish head curry eaters have finally found a bad curry fish head!

To get here you have to either drive or cab down. It’s located at the end of Punggol. Punggol Settlement has a nice view of the sea and has many other restaurants and bistro bars. Anyway Punggol Seafood is a old school seafood restaurant. The restaurant looks traditional and old but clean. The prices here are definitely much cheaper than Jumbo or Long beach. Therefore do not expect their services to be the same as those expensive seafood restaurants. However the staffs are still friendly and polite. I ordered some of their signature dishes such as their homemade toufu, Chilli crab and mee goreng. Their signature homemade toufu is ok only. I don’t find it tasty. Sambal Kang Kong also not that great. Their mee goreng and teo chew fried mee sua are nice though. I would recommend trying these. They were having promotion for their signature Chilli crab at $36 per crab, so I ordered one to try, and I must say I enjoyed their signature Chilli crab. In my opinion it tasted better than Jumbo’s Chilli crab. The crab is huge, fresh and the savoury sauce is thick, creamy and isn’t too spicy which is perfect for me. Highly recommended. This restaurant is definitely a better choice among the other seafood restaurants at Punggol Settlement. Value for money and better tasting food. One thing I was irritated is that every once awhile a housefly come buzzing around. They better do something about this before customers find a dead fly in their soup. Lastly, the open space carpark at Punggol Settlement is pretty expensive though. It’s $4+ for less than 2 hours.

I was lucky to get invited to a dinner there. The food was very good. Liked the chili crab. It can get a bit messy when eating. There are plenty of napkins and a room to wash your hands. Give it a try!

Be prepared to wait for a long time when you dine here. Came on a Sunday evening and waited for 1 hour for the food to come to realise our order was lost. Server immediately resent our order and gave us priority, and food came out in 15~20 mins. Very clearly understaffed with 3 servers on average. They are pretty elderly so do be patient and understanding 😊 Fried Cereal Prawn (I forgot to take pictures) looks really good but rather milky and the golden aroma of the fried cereal was not really coming through. Prawns were huge but not really fresh. Would still say its not bad. Price is based on grams. Real MVP would be the Salted Egg Calamari that was really good and not really oily! White beehoon was a good buy at $6.80! Really light and good portion size. Fried Mantou was really simple and good :) Mee goreng was really oily. But hearty and flavourful. Good portion size too. Sambar kangkong was oily too bit goes really well with rice and a good shating portionfor at least 2 people. Total bill came up to be close to $80 with the images below.

The food are good, and I love their Chinese New Year dishes, and most importantly, their services are faster than more of the restaurants at The Puggol Settlement.

Located at The Ponggol Settlement, it serves popular local Chinese dish, particularly chilli crabs. There was pomo $29 per crab. Ordered chilli and black pepper crab. The chilli one was ok, though I did not expect the paper crab to be saucy type. Not fantastic. Don't expect the service to be like East Coast Seafood restaurant. I was not impress at all.

Disappointment. Was there with family today (9 April) reached around 6.20pm, managed to get table for 6 adults and 1 child (below 2 years old). Placed our order and waited but only the drinks came with no sight of the food, timing was already 7.40pm. Went to enquire, then they serve our sambal Lala (it was cold) with 6 bowls of rice. Finished the Lala and the rice, the other dishes still not served. Had to feed my child plain white rice as he was fussy already, had to feed him milk to calm him down. Waited another 10 mins, went to ask again, server staff say got to check, timing was 8.10pm. Told them if not ready, cancel order, cannot wait as baby getting hungry and tired. Shortly came the tofu, staff say the kitchen thing she dunno, we dun blame her but we wondered, why we see other customers who came later than us but had their food served before us? Went to pay at counter, the lady at cashier still can say, the food is getting ready, then we cancel. I question her, ready? U mean 1 dish at every hour? (No shouting was involved, was in a talking tone but of coz in a surprised manner becoz of what she say) We waited patiently coz we understand Covid time, maybe shorthanded. But no apologies from them, no pre-empt when we just reach that waiting time may be long so customers can decide, the place was not even packed or crowded when we reach and get our table. Adults were left hungry and we had to find alternatives to settle our hunger. Just my experience at this place for all your reading and reference.

The chilli crab was better while the flesh of the pepper crab tasted dry, $90 each. We liked the white bee hoon, at $6 was great value and comfort food. The salted egg prawns, asparagus were good too. The famous mee goreng was above average but we preferred the bee hoon more. Condition of the toilets could be improved.
