Review China Street Fritters - Singapore

Marcus Goh
stall been featured as an old stall in tv programs, owners retiring. From visit, heard likely closed after March2022.. Stall been around for 40years or so. Visited and tried the food, which are made fresh daily at the stall. sliced egg and five spice roll quite nice, more memorable than the rest of the food. stall seen much changes in Singapore, wish stall owners to have a happy retirement.

Are U Hungry 😋? #AUHBMark #AUHFCNgohHiang #AUHFCHeritageFood #AUHFCEconomyBeeHoon Stall : China Street Fritters #01-64 @ Maxwell Food Centre, 1 Kadayanallur Street. S(069184). Operating hours : 11:30am to 8:00pm (Off on Monday) Waited for an hour since 10:30am where I arrived and parked near to Chinatown Food Centre behind/ next to Buddha Tooth Temple and crossed over to here. Saw the Senior Uncle (eldest) and Senior Lady transporting their cooked stuff to their stall. As I sat in front of the stall to witness their action/ drama, if any from customers, Q was then dispatched per sequential, mine was no#: 10. By the time the food ready, it was 12:00 🕛 noon, that’s where the lunch hungry crowd came in doves 🕊 fast and furious to book the table/ seats w/ tissues (that’s the local culture of Kiasu, what to do ? Can’t beat them, join them … Lol 😂) All their ala-carte items were freshly made in the morning and slices up as per your pickings or via their ready Menu sets which I think more cost effective and I decided on the maximum Menu set of 2 paxes @ $10.30 w/ 2 plates of Bee Hoon but I am eating alone ! … 😅😜 As usual Photography 1st and with a few tricks in my sleeve and chatted with the eldest Uncle : Mr Richard, as he shared the SOP of eating their Ngoh Hiang (glad fully called Fritters, as they shall fried b4 serving to customers to ensure freshness!) I had ordered set D, comprises : 1. Sausage 2. Egg slice 3. Fishball 4. Beancurd 5. Ngoh Hiang (Meat roll) 6. Liver roll 7. Century Egg 8. Bee Hoon X 2 plates ++++ ✍️ 🥘 ++++ The recommended SOP in eating : 1. sausage 2. Egg slice 3. Liver 4. Ngoh Hiang In-between, insert cucumbers 🥒 to cleanse and cycle repeats with other ala carte items per the list above … 😅😜 … Truly, that’s how U may appreciate their repertoire of Fried Fritters better ! 😮 🤩 ⭐️ 👍 Akin to watching a movie 🎥, building up its tempo, momentum, drama and action … 😱😅 It’s taste of intensity flavouring built up from mild to medium to high intense w/ Ngoh Hiang last, with its 5 spice powder flavouring to whet your appetite and taste bud ! That’s the “古早味”!@ max … 😮 🤩 Every single piece of their collection uniquely crafted and handmade and laboriously done ✅ and truly a works of mind, heart ❤️ and soul : all Into one : That’s Amazing Grace ! Passionately ! 😮 🤩 ⭐️ 👍 It’s curated home made braised sauce were unique, savoury and flavourfully done ✅ ; same for it’s chillies 🌶 sauce too ! 😮 🤩 ⭐️ 👍 Had eaten some years ago, as I recollected my taste bud then versus now, it’s totally different as the consistency of their ala-carte food remained while my taste bud had been elevated to the level of enjoyment as I seated till 2:00pm ++ to complete this article to share the joy of eating this Heritage legacy food from “China Street Fritters”. As I remembered that the Owner : Mr Ng had wanted to relinquish his stall with a price tag @ $1M, as I gathered from Richard, a bidder of $800k draws the closest to date but yet to express in writing nor paying a “deposit fees of Intent”, until then, the Asking price tag remained at S$1 Million dollars. (Edited: it shall formed part of their retirement fund for the family members of about 5). Therefore, come savoury the goodness of this legacy brand of Ngoh Hiang made great with a strong heritage background and many regulars + followers (that include me : their No. #1 fan now ! 😅😜) Their food was so good that I had literally written non-stop with a filled stomach of 2 Bee Hoon plates and an assortment of their famed collection of “China Street Fritters”; see the photos collage relating to this story and be awed and wow-ed! Your action please to support this highly recommended stall to your savoury ! Mid Week Cheers ☕️

Old school fritters…. Not particularly outstanding but value for money. $10.30 for two dinners with decent sized helpings in April 2022 when lots of hawker places have raised prices. Long queue during lunch time as only one person doing the cooking and packing while the other person takes the orders.

Came here impromptu almost late evening on the 1st day of New Year. Saw their interview in CNA 2020. Review of their handmade fritters are good. 1st try on their food. Really very good. Totally different from others selling the Ngoh Hiang that are factory made. Worth to come & try if never try before this handmade trade is gone forever.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

5 Spice Roll / Wu Xiang Xia Bing (SGD $8) @ China Street Fritters. . A taste of tradition at this old-school stall in Maxwell Food Centre, with the current 2nd-generation owners set to retire in March 2022. . For over 60 years, the family has been serving handmade Hokkien style 5 spice pork liver rolls, moist and tender and crisp with a robust meaty earthy mineral bitter savoury salty flavour. . The soft sweet potato cakes have lovely vegetal earthy sweet flavour, while the chewy guan chang / Chinese marinated lean pork sausages has addictive meaty savoury sweet flavour. . Also loved the bouncy tofu beancurd with grainy sweet flavour, and the robust chili dipping sauce with its sharp savoury spicy kick. . Everything is served in an assortment set meal, making it easy to decide. Paired with hot fresh fried bee hoon / vermicelli noodles, so yummy.

I must admit having eaten this stall and it's similar competitors in its neighborhood over the years , I do not count it as outstanding but rather a benchmark. I must salute the hardwork of these hawker whom made these heritage dishes from scratch . Handmade version like these and factory made one has significant difference in texture and taste . Call it my personal bias , other than it is less greasy and fresh nothing is too outstanding. Perhaps I had been spoilt by years of indulgence of quality master hawker standard in this district and it's surrounding neighborhood during my childhood. This is good enough now because those whom are better has retired or had graduated from life... Having said these , please support the store as it's part of Singapore intangible heritage. I sincerely pray hard for the hawkers to continue to produce these food so that at the very least , the next generation could savour a this part of Singapore food culture.

One of my favorite Ngoh Hiang stall. Very old school type. Be prepared to wait because it is very popular.

I really wonder what's super fancy about this? Except for the ngoh hiang, which I think tastes really unique, you can literally get better versions of the rest elsewhere. And the painful wait for more than an hour makes me shake my head a few more times, on top of the so-so flavours. This could well be the last time I see myself queue up at this stall. Truly overrated.
