It was my 2nd time having a family lunch at Lai Huat. This time round at China Sq previously at East Coast Rd. I was introduced to Lai Huat by my cousin Stewart who sweared by it and assured us the food quality, service and value for money factor is unparalleled by many restaurants despite the branding sounds humble. We kept our menu simple, with the Signature Sambal Fish, 青龙苗, seafood bitter gourd soup, 虾枣, and the dual style crispy chicken. Those who are familiar with KL style zhi char should know the 青龙苗. A kind of sprout like chives. Simple, taste good on it's own. My mom's favourite is the dual style crispy chicken. Crispy chicken is a wedding dinner regular dish. But here's the twist. The breast meat is oftenly unpopular because of it's dry texture. The chef came out with an indigenous idea to create a Thai style tangy salad with the breast meat. Serve this 2 items as a pair has it's unique selling point. The signature fish blew me off totally. Some critics say it is too dry. To me this is a unique selling point. Besides the signature Sambal which doesn't need much introduction, the whole fish is crispy inside out and I can chew the fins like a fish cracker. The fragrance of clean oil and fresh fish is a winning factor, besides the well blended Sambal which remains a secret recipe and it's not for sale. I was impressed. If you have any foreign friends who wants to have a taste of local 'Kampung' dishes, Lai Huat is definitely one of the places.

The buffet is good. We like the freshness of the food, especially the poached prawns. The prompfet with sambal chilli & the fish maw soup are great. Good value for money. Would be even better if dessert is added to the buffet menu; it will make the meal more complete & refreshing.

Nice food, especially their signature sambal fish and prawn paste chicken. We had their buffet and food was served very fast. Staff are very friendly and change our plates quite a few times, great service!

First tried Zi Char Ala Carte buffet on 1/1/2022 for family gathering. This Zi Char buffet is highly recommended for friend and family gathering who love Zi Char and also big eater. Surpringly there are variety of Zi Char Dishes, the foods are very standard eventhough it is in buffet styles and the foods served very fast after we put the orders. I love their signature dishes like Sambal Fish, Crab Meat with Fish Maw Pottage, Chicken with prawn paste and homemade prawn roll. There are some of the refillable dishes are highly recommended like Sotong with salted egg cream sauce, Cereal Sotong with egg floss(MUST ORDERD), Lala with superior stocks(we ordered 4 bowl, haha), Lala with fragrant sauce, Lala with ginger and onion and Fragrants Coffee Pork Meat with Honey Glaze(This dishes is very uniques like eating Kopiko Sweets, the meat is very tender too) . Credit to their services too as the waitress will try their best to serve us quickly when the foods are ready and take our orders soon after we waives our hand to them eventhough they are busy to serve others customers. The manager is very friendly and he even recommened the uniques way to eat the pork bun by adding on the sambal fish (Must Try!!), he also keeps checking with us the quality of foods and whether all the foods that we ordered had served to us or not. Overall, we are SATISFIED to have new year gathering here for Zi Char Ala Carte buffet served in 2 hours.

Return trip with my husband. Lai Huat was his childhood family trip restaurant and we are glad to find an outlet nearby. The food is great as usual and the portions are generous. (Don’t be deceived by the plates). I tried the yam paste and it’s especially smooth. If you are wondering if there is a difference between this outlet and others, the staff did share that they drain the oil of the sambal for a while more before adding it to the fish to cater to more healthy preferences of the office crowd in the area. I personally didn't find any difference in taste but it may be food for thought if you prefer to have more of the sambal oil.

Food was great. Service was good too, especially from the manager! Welcoming service from him! He really know his stuff best! 👍🏻 Do note tat food portion is quite big, do go a bit easy on the ordering. Restaurant can be quite noisy at times.

Came for lunch during a weekday and the lunch set menu was nice and affordable. The restaurant is clean and cool with aircon and the set meal comes with a drink which was nice. I ordered the pork ribs with rice and added a fried egg on the side. The taste was nice and I enjoyed my lunch. I would return for more lunches.

Great food and wide variety of zichar selection. Recommend the sambal fish, crab meat with fish Maw and Shang Tang or sambal Lala. Love the prawn paste chicken and slice fish cook in different flavours with ginger or black pepper.
