Review Okinawan Diner Nirai-kanai - Singapore

Automatic five star for serving nice ice cold beer with beer mug chilled. The beer is just above freezing temperatures that it has ice flakes floating inside :) Walked by this restaurant so many times and always thought it is tacky imitation Japanese restaurant until a Japanese colleague suggested it. The food is fairly decent with a large selection of set course options. Highly recommend the Okinawa round donut. The staff says it takes 15 minutes to prepare but it’s worth the wait.

This is a gem for its authentic Okinawan food fare. It is situated in a nondescript corner of Great World City. But the quality of its food punched above its weight. I ordered the grilled pork with cartilage. A sure winner with the right seasonings. The grilled sting ray is another favorite. The tofu dish with pork is rich in taste and flavors. I had the Hamburg burger and it arrived well cooked and tasty. Overall experience is good. Customer service is decent. When you have cravings for authentic Okinawan food - this is the place. The only downside is that I was hit with a minor MSG attack which is quite rare at this joint.

We used to go to both their original locations before those closed and they ended up at Great World City. The quality of the food is the same, though the atmosphere isn’t quite what it was. Okinawan food isn’t for everyone (come on, bitter gourd is healthy!) so it comprises about half the menu and the other half is more traditional Japanese fare. The food is generally good and the pricing is reasonable enough. They also have a nice selection of Okinawan beverages, well, at least the alcoholic variety. The bitter gourd tea is good for a non-alcoholic Okinawan drink. They do get busy so a reservation is recommended. On that note, they really could improve their online presence. I’m not aware of any online booking option and their website tries to direct you to their Facebook page (which has precious little on it) and their Instagram account (which doesn’t exist). Service at the restaurant is fairly good. Worth a visit.

Quality food, taste fresh and nice. Ordered the stir fry bitter gourd, tofu, egg and pork. Bitter gourd slightly bitter than what we usually eat but taste good. The cold peanut tofu has alittle surprise, it taste more like a dessert with the peanut and ginger taste. The seaweed tempura taste good too, hot and crispy. Prefer to eat the seaweed tempura plain without the dipping sauce and sea salt as it too salty for me. Friendly and fast service crew.

The restaurant has a nice and pleasant decoration and is spacious. We ordered #53 Gilled Mackerel ($18), #104 Okinawan Soup Noodle Set Meal ($16.50), #111 Minced Beef Cutlet Set Meal ($16.50) and #109 Stir-Fried Pork Belly Sliced with Kimuchi Set Meal ($16.50). The food has interesting combinations and was unique, unlike those served usual Japanese restaurant. The food was good (and reasonably priced) but not outstanding. Overall, an enjoyable experience and will visit again.

Okinawan cuisine is reputed to be healthy & the secret to the longevity of Okinawans. There are 3x more centenarians per 100k inhabitants in Okinawa compared to the US. They are 40% more likely to cross 100yrs old compared to the average Japanese. We ordered stir fried bitter gourd with pork, beancurd & eggs ($9.50++ L) and simmered pork belly ($9.80++ for 2 pieces). These are Okinawan classics. Our waitress also recommended us the cold noodles w/ hot dipping sauce ($14.80++) which turned out really well. Nice home cooked feel in a rustic ambiance.

What a wonderful and quaint diner/Izakaya that specialises in Okinawan food. Don’t think there are many like it in Singapore. Food focuses on local Okinawan products and relatively healthy ways of cooking. Interestingly; there are also Americanised items. Drinks menu is extensive and definitely worth a try if in Great World City.

Food and service is good, just a bit pricey. We try out the set and a la carte. Fried bitter gourd, their cold Tofu and seasoned rice are yummy. Seasoned Rice with noodle set Porky must try.(no photo). Recommended!

I believe that we can never satisfy everyone's standard even with the same kind of food and standard provided. It's a nice place to dine in although it has aged with time. Staffs come and go, used to be a full Japanese crew when I first visited and now, it is a mixture but, that's the way it is with today's economy and manpower issues. Food standard had degrated slightly but it was good enough for me to be proud to introduce it to as well as to bring my friends from overseas and my family here for a meal or two every now and then. Service bells are readily located at every table, you just have to actually bother to use it really and the staff will attend to you in no time. During my most recent visit, I find the serving of food timed well and the staffs are generally polite. Just have to bear in mind that it can get rather crowded so, if you wanna walk in, go early because most people would have chosed to make an advance reservation instead for dining at a specific time. Thank you Okinawan Diner Nirai-Kanai for the good food served and for working hard on service standards. I know it is not easy to run a food business in Singapore with customers with varied standards from different walks of life and of diversed nationality. 최선.

Nice place and good ambience only a bit rowdy on weekends dinner time with some food sold out. Otherwise most food very good and staff rather friendly!

Went for a second visit and found the experience much better. Probably the wrong choice of dishes in the earlier visit.

My awful dining experience with my family at this restaurant. Date of dining: 22 Oct 2017. 1) Service was bad. Waited 20mins for them to clear a table for 3. Even thou we have been secured a table. 2) No service attention. I got up 4 times and walk to them, just to get their attention in food ordering. 3) White plain rice was served uncooked. You can tasted the hard bits when your teeth sink in. This is Japanese pearl rice which should not even taste this way. I have to bring the bowl of rice and got them to change. Waited 5mins and no rice came. Had to get up again to ask for rice. So pathetic just to get a bowl of rice to go with my food. The rest of the dishes turned cold. 4) Ordered and re-ordered beers. Each beer came lesser as the foam gets taller. No standard. 5) Re called the waitress, but they just zoomed away! I understand they are busy. But we are also customers. 6) Food is overpriced. Probably they are flown in from Okinawa. We understand as Food items are indeed different as they are from Okinawa. Highly NOT recommended.

Been coming here for a long while. Always excellent for the stewed pork belly and the Orion beers, though the highball is a little watered down.

It is ok, not amazing. Inside is looking old, food arrives at reasonable time. Menu has good variety, the taste is average.

Okinawan Diner has one of the worst service I have experienced. We walked out after 30 minutes of waiting at the table for our orders to be taken after asking for the waiter 3 times. When they were told that 30 mins is not acceptable - in fact it's like shit - the only response they gave was - "Why ?" Very bad.
