Review The Basil Inn - Singapore

Rebecca Chan
Great little place serving delicious Thai food with very authentic taste. The Tom Yum soup has its sour spice level exactly right you would think that you are back in one of the Soi. The beef balls and brisket are tender and flavourful. The Prawn nuggets are just right. Topping these up with sincere services willing to wait for us to even when we are the last table to leave for the night, I will recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting a piece of Thai memories.

A nice Thai restro in pasir ris. We Had a variety of dishes to share. The pineapple rice was a bit small and they don’t accept paywave / Apple Pay here (and cash only for <10$ transactions) . But all things considered the food is authentic despite price on slightly higher side

It’s been years since I ate here ever since I moved to Thailand….taste is still the same, almost want to tear up cuz it brought back a lot of memories when I was a kid growing up and eating their Thai food. This place still serves one of the very best Thai foods cooked by Thai aunties in Singapore!

Ordered from food panda. The portions are small. We ordered the steam sea bass but only the soup delivered. The fish went missing. The other food taste is still good.

If you are like me who loves Bangkok and thai food and regret not able to go BKK during this trying time, fret not! You can relive the Thai experience at Basil Inn located in downtown east. Have been eating at this eatery since 2013 and the food served here have never failed me once at all. Food are cooked with love from authentic chef from Thailand. It really rekindled the memories of street thai food in BKK. Some of the best dishes and the ones I always ordered without fail are papaya salad, prawn cake, honey chicken, stirred fried kai lan, omelette, Tom yum soup seafood (clear based) and tapioca with milk (dessert). Not to mention my fav dish of all time and highly sought after dish (be prepared that it will be sold out before end of the day) steamed sea bass garnished with lots of garlic, cut chillies and coriander leaves on top). Omg.. the soup base of this steamed sea bass can drive u nuts (in a good way). Try it and enjoy the amazing experience of Thailand! Sawadee krup!

(Updated) Still one of the most authentic thai cuisine in east. Their seabass fish in special thai sauce is especially appetizing with rice. The prawn cake is crisp on the outside and juicy in the inside. The pandan chicken is fairly done. Their pork stir fried with garlic is a new addition to the menu. Pricing has increased over the years but still generally affordable. A meal for 2 adults and 1 child set you back to $60 for filled tummies. Great view of the wild wild wet if you are seated along the window aisle. Order all place and paid at cashier before food can be served. Menu have GST inclusive. No service charge. Hope they have some loyalty program for frequent diners like ourselves or for NTUC members.

The service sucks. We ordered an omelette that came looking nothing like a Thai omelette should. It was scrambled instead of the fluffy and crispy ones. We were told that the normal Thai omelette that we wanted had to be requested for despite being on the image on the menu. The egg that came after we exchanged was much bigger in size. Only accepts cash because they probably didn’t wanna pay for any fees too.

I think the food is at its best, it is tasty and definitely worth returning. However I thought the portion can be slightly generous, that would be awesome for me. :)

We ordered a few dishes and they served us a wrong drink, we were supposed to order lemon grass drink and they given us lemon tea but we drank without realising it, when approached the lady boss, she asked us if we had drink it? We replied yes, then she shook her head, reluctant to change the drink? Well a drink is so cheap only ? U mean u gonna serve it to the next customer if we didn't drink it? What kind of customer service is this? Just change a drink and apologised for the mistake? That drink only cost a few cents, seriously disappointed for their service, for hygiene purpose maybe u want to consider if u want to visit this place.

Others may have mixed reviews on this place, but I have been patronising them ever since their first store near ntuc chalet entrance. And I always have a give and take mentality, because the owners are trying to serve great food at superb prices, there would of course be a greater flow of customers and regulars at dinner time and PH. Then of course manpower issues, wrong orders and stuffs like that would happen. So back to my point, we as customers are having such good food at great prices then of course we should be forgiving if they err on small mistakes and wrong orders or prolonged waiting time. If you ask why, ask yourself the reason why you drop by in the first place. Simply said, cheap and good takes time, fast and good is expensive. Pick your poison and go to some posh restaurant if you wana complain like a petty weasley, boo~ In the end I would like to thank the owner for keeping this place running at the same price and quality even through rising rents and workload, sadly some customers are sadistic and chose to pick bones instead of giving pats on shoulder.

Food was normal. Portion were just right for us. Visit once and never again. The service was probably one of the worse I have ever since i experienced.

Been eating at Basil Inn since they were a small shop, followed them move 2 location until their current spot today. Food is great as usual, my wife (Thai) love it, my kids love it. Best Authentic Thai food in the east! Be prepared to wait if you visit during peak hours, but they are doing their best ;)

Came here for lunch. Tom yum soup is better then average. Prawn cake is terrible / basil pork average / yum wum Seng average. There is a small part time Indian girl- service from her is terrible no service at all. When we came in she signalled us to sit at a table with her Chin. Dosent tell us what dish she is serving, just slams it down. When I asked where can I order she just says “counter” she clearly does not want to work here / and is doing harm to your restaurant. Should train her/ get rid of her. There is no service charge but should offer some level of service at it seems to be a restaurant, if not you will lose customers

Cash only. Pay at counter to order. So in this restaurant-setting outlet The service part is non existent. I appreciate the tight labour market and the good intent of transferring savings to customers (No service charge no GST), however you shd then remove the chandelier and other deco that trick customers to think that they this is a sit down full service restaurant. Position yourself as a self-service eatery from on onset and everything feels better.

If you know your thai food, you will love this place. This is not just your "another" neighbourhood thai food joint. The Basil Inn makes me feel like i'm in Thailand whenever i dine there lol.

We have been eating in this restaurant for almost 3 years. Never been disappointed. Friendly boss and staff. Can get very busy during meal time so get ready to wait. Will continue to patronize this restaurant.
