Review Shima Restaurant - Singapore

Berwin Leong (Berleaf)
My wife and I have been to Shima a few times prior to covid period. Was rather disappointed with it on our most recent visit. Fallen in standard significantly in both food quality and service standard. With lots of very young and inexperience waiter and waitresses. Most unacceptable incident was that the food we ordered were not served and when we seek assistance from the waiter, we were asked again what was ordered. In the end, we still did not receive the order and left with a stomach of anger.

Went for lunch. Ordered the buffet. Weekends free for oysters I think. I thought I could finish everything for the first round followed by additional orders of beef, chicken, oysters, salmon. Was impossible. The first round was packed full with goodness. I was stuffed and could not order additionals. Quality of food is excellent. Staff efficient, alert and friendly. Also value for money. Well definitely go back again.

Went for Teppanyaki on Mother’s Day. There were quite some miscommunication that deter the experience. - We were informed there was 40% off set and ordered 3 sets. Only realised only applied to 1 set after. - The set we ordered was $175 (before gst & service charge) and came with beef, lobster and scallop. Honestly I didn’t find the culinary and food freshness exceptional. - Added 4 salmon, the server didn’t initiate informing us each add on was actually 2 pieces. Ended up we actually had 8 pieces. - Beverage wasn’t refill consistently. I would prefer tetsu at chijimes which is more tasty and affordable.

Totally not worth the price. Food was subpar and average at best. Fish did not taste fresh and beef was not tender. The buffet was not a buffet-- you could only order limited items : grilled salmon, beef, chicken, egg and tempura (all of which were not great). My partner and I tried to think of what was good about our meal and could not come up with anything to praise. You can do better teppanyaki on your own. If you still choose to go though, do not park at Keyaki (entering the gantry), parking is daylight robbery at $5/hr on a weekday and no complimentary parking coupon is provided for by the restaurant after paying over $150 for our meal.

The standard from yester years (1990s) has dropped by about 40% or more... Went there on a Saturday afternoon and ordered the set lunch. There seemed to be only 2 teppanyaki chefs, who seemed tired/jaded and went about cooking the food as though it was a chore....completely not a hint of teppanyaki showmanship or charisma... The standout dishes were pretty much just the beef, prawns, and oysters. The chef cooked us oysters even though it wasn't on the set lunch menu 😋 The other items were just stomach fillers. Garlic rice was pre cooked and dished out of a rice cooker. The wait staff was very attentive and constantly filled up the tea. Beware of the parking, it's like $5 an hour 😳

The staff were amazing 🤩 They got us counter seats in front of the chef, suggested the set menu which suited us better than the buffet menu. We have a very small appetite- the difference was the set menu didn't have oyster, scallop or allowed re-orders of certain dishes. Throughout the meal, the staff were super attentive in topping up the free flow water 💦 (charged at $1.50++) and clearing the empty plates. The chef was very friendly to my little one and even ended with a 2nd fire 🔥 show to entertain him. It's his 🥇 and possibly most memorable Teppanyaki ever. The food was delicious 😋 Highly recommend the salmon, swordfish, prawns and the beef with garlic. It was definitely a very full meal and was very appreciative of the staff allowing us to takeaway desert for later. 👍

Really awesome food with the best of services. Serving portions are also just nice but it may be a little too much for young kids.

Took the Dinning City menu to experience this one of the oldest Japanese restaurant in Singapore. Staffs are friendly and the atmosphere is nice. A little surprise that of the color of the man Kimono feel like a mismatch. Regardless, the service was good. The menu is a little basic but it is what the menu offer and is good value. The maki sushi taste good, rice is a little hard but mixed well with vinegar. Chawanmushi has a nice texture but in a lighter taste, served with metal spoon which is unusual. The salmon is tasty. Miso soup also on the lighter taste side and feel like is missing a base, katsuo bushi. Good experience and say try something else in the future.

Service was decent enough. But the food was really average, and borderline bland. I took the Shima set. Sashimi appetizer was superb with a good quality wasabi. King prawn was decently cooked though could have a better sear, but had a mayo-ish sauce that's bland, satiating and did not help elevate the dish at all. Scallop has a nice sear, but it was so unsalted that the flavors failed to come through. A garlic buttery sauce was added at the end and it made the whole dish extremely oily. Salmon in some sauce in foil was okay. A touch more seasoning please. Stir fried mixed vegetables was oily and bland. The us prime ribeye was tough, and overcooked. I requested medium rare and it came almost medium well. Once again, borderline bland. The garlic fried rice was okay too. The egg was fried till extremely dry though. Overall needed more seasoning. Fruit at the end was extremely sweet. Miao soup was fabulous too. But at $130+ per head, I expected more finesse in the cooking, and better flavours. An average teppanyaki experience. I would go back for the wonderful sashimi though!

Been coming here for more than 20 years, since I was a kid. Standard is definitely lower then before. However, freshness, quality and portion of food is good. Price is less costly then before. Personal preference, the garlic fried rice was too garlicky, over empowering the fragrance of the egg. Veg was too blend for me and too raw. =D Friendly chef. Will definitely come back again.

Delightful lunch! Every dish was attire than the next. Fresh and seasoned uniquely. PLENTY of food for the hungriest customer. This weekday buffet is an excellent deal and the staff were wonderful. Followed by a nice treat of very tasty vanilla ice cream for dessert.

Dined at Shima yesterday to celebrate my girlfriend's birthday. I requested for a good seat. Indeed they gave me the best seat (direct view of the teppanyaki chef in action)! Great thanks to the staffs who made that happen! We had the teppanyaki buffet lunch and was served with a birthday ice cream at the end of the meal. I must say the food quality and taste was really worth the every dime ($50~/pax) we paid for. Ingredients used were really fresh (except for the salmon sashimi starter) and generous. We were rather surprised that they even served the flavour of ice cream that each of us really loved. How did you guys at Shima know that? Regardless pure luck or by past experience, we were really satisfied with the food and service. Kudos to the chef as well, really attentive; seems to know what we were hoping to see and taste throughout the whole dining session. The only downside is that there isn't any complimentary parking as it is a standalone restaurant from that of Goodwood Park Hotel, as such for those driving to dine, do park at far east plaza shopping center right next to the hotel. It is $1.07 for first hour and $1.07 for each every subsequent 30min. Much cheaper than the hotel itself with $5.25 for first hour and $2++ for every subsequent 30 min. People have high expectations for Japanese restaurants' cuisines and services not just because of the price paid for these meals, but it is the faith and trust in the chef and staffs to make things happen. Despite the mixed reviews below, stay positive and work hard to make things better. Will definitely return again for more teppanyaki! Cheers to team at Shima Restaurant!

We had dinner there for a birthday celebration. Totally disappointing. Staff was polite but clueless. They could not explain the different types of sashimi & sushi when asked. Experience was More like sushi served at a fast food sushi joint. Food doesn't look fresh except for teppanyakki rib-eye. Sad for a restaurant like Shima. Will not return.

I use to love this place 20+ years ago. But these days, it wasn't that fantastic.

Service is not as good few years back & Food now is nothing to such about as compare to the price paid per pax. Doubt will return as there are now better place than them. Bye!

Really wanted to patronise for a birthday dinner party. Called to make an enquiry but the man who answered the phone had appalling manners- very curt. Didn't bother to say goodbye and hung up. Will take my money elsewhere. What a turn off!
