Review Eng Seng Restaurant - Singapore

I’m here to warn anyone who wanted to go to this place for black pepper crab. Do not go!!! Last time I had the black pepper crab at this place was back in 2013 and I just returned here tonight after almost 9 years. I got here at 7:15pm on a Sunday evening, only 3 tables with less than 10 people were dining, no lines of people waiting outside. It was totally different to the scene of my last visit 9 years ago! I thought about not going in and go somewhere else, but since I made a long way here from Marina Bay i thought I would just give it a try. As me and my wife still unloading our bags at the table sat down the chubby boss came straight to us with 2 medium size crabs and asked us how would you like them to be cooked? My wife is not a a big eater so she said 1 crab would be enough, the boss then said 1 will not be enough for both of you and he quickly put the crabs on the scale. While the scale needle is still moving the chubby boss took the crab out off the scale basket and said it costs $128. I would have to give the taste 3/5 as the black pepper sauce was a little too sweet. And it was way over priced for a place like this (no air condition, rude & lousy service, bad hygiene especially the covid cases has been sky rocketed above 10,000). You could get a a lot better meal elsewhere with this price! I also had a stir fried water spinach and the portion was extremely small even for 2 person! When we were still trying to finish our meal (it was about 8:20pm) the waitress started closing the door shutters and switching off all the lights. The chubby boss came and left the bill on our table and asked us to pay the bill first in cash only. I don’t know how a place like this can still survive. This will definitely be our last time to this place!!!

Tried this for the first time after seeing the raving reviews of its pepper crab. The taste deserves 4/5 but giving it a 3/5 as the owner charged an extra 400g. Took out a huge crab that weighed 1.4 kg, brought it home and weighed the box (including the sauce) which was only 1 kg. One can tell just by looking at the pincers! P.S. The pepper taste has a slightly sweet element, not the typical dark, thick and heavier pepper sauce No doubt though, the meat is fresh and young

Here to try their “special “ black pepper sauce crab ! Unlike other places , this is less peppery and more sweetish flavour. I’m not sure this is what I am looking for in black pepper flavour. Maybe it’s more for the local taste buds because I’ve seen people enjoying dipping with the sauce which I have mixed feeling in it because I am not sure what flavour am I tasting ?? Rice noodle with gravy and the sweet sour pork are average. $7 rice noodle is definitely not enough for 4 people. I think this place is more for local people and My friends told me the price of the crab has gone higher. I have to admit that this is kind of like a snack for me , I was still hungry after this meal. :-P

What’s famous here is it’s black pepper crab and it does live up to the hype. Unlike most black pepper crabs that tend to be spicy and moderately savoury, the black pepper crab here has a depth of flavour that makes you lick the sauce off the shell and your fingers. Unfortunately the Chili crab isn’t great though - you’d find even the banal version from Jumbo being better

Expect to pay over $100 when dining here and to prevent any rude awakening. It's not a fancy looking restaurant to be honest, but the food options are simple yet good. I wouldn't say it has the best zichar dishes but it serves definitely one of the best black pepper crabs in Singapore, at a cost. We love the black pepper sauce which you probably can only find the taste here. The owner is probably very confident of his chef's crab cooking skills hence they could afford to charge crabs at $75/kg knowing that patrons would still be willing to pay. Giving credit to the crab chef, this guy really knows his stuff because peeling the shell out of the crab, the flesh falls out nicely and in whole, meaning the crab meat is extremely succulent, fat and juicy and dipping this with their really good black pepper sauce is truly an indulgence.

Very good service and friendly, Pepper Crab delicious, a bit sweet but yummy, Chilli Crab was nice and spicy Mee Goreng seafood and Kangkong was delicious too. Really enjoyed the food and highly recommended.

Usually we would eat in but this time round, we ordered take away! The seafood mee goreng was very tasty. I do find the mud crabs fresh and their flesh sweet. Their signature Black Pepper Crab sauce was a little too buttery/milky and sweet for my personal taste preference but the chilli crab was good albeit the sauce had turned slightly watery probably the starch had broken down. Nonetheless a satisfying meal. Coordination of delivery was a bit of a hassle though.

Perplexed at the lack of reviews commenting on their service. We heard of the place from a friend who recommended their black pepper crabs but left without trying the food so i cannot speak for the quality of the food. A worker (50+ lady) spoke to us in a very rude tone when we asked for a menu and seemed very unwilling to serve us. Person who took our order was also very rude and kept interrupting us and rushing our order (side note: they don’t have a physical menu). Took our patronage elsewhere and I advice those who would not like their night to be ruined by rude staff to do the same.

How is it that a news article came out that the "original" one was winding up their business and a "new" shop just so happen to pop up almost immediately? Was told conflicting reports that the original brand was still there but something felt a little off (why the need for renaming). Oh ya.. if it is really new management, couldnt you at least spared some money to spruce up the place? Sure the operating hours have improved but the bad attitudes towards customers sure didnt. Standards didnt meet what I had in my memory too.. but I guess things always taste better in memory?
