Good, homey porridge. Several options like chicken, preserved egg and fish. The rice grains are thoroughly cooked and the julienned ginger is very tender and gentle. If you prefer the more watery gooey porridge, you will find this too thick. Very substantial and filling. Good fuel to kick start a day at school or work.
But no pork options.
I asked the auntie to tone down the addition of preserved vegetable (冬菜) because i wanted to cut back on salt intake. Skipped sesame oil and just live with fried shallots in oil. Good enough for aromatics! If you like, ask for some sliced red chilli to spice it up a notch.
Like the fish, chicken and preserved egg serving best! You get 3 types of ingredients all in 1 bowl!
Flavourful, hearty and affordable! Pasty consistency and piping hot, generous slices of century egg and topped with raw egg. This is a definite must try when you visit Maxwell. But be early cause they always sell out after lunch. Sucks that they are closed every Tuesday (I always forget and crave it in Tuesdays lol!). At $4 per bowl.. you can never go wrong with Zhen Zhen Porridge!
Traditional fish and chicken porridge with good texture and excellent flavour. Full of ingredients for a $4 bowl. A gem here.
1st time i tried this porridge was 20 years ago - and now here i am again.. walking down the memory lane… the porridge still good and tasty- but too bad the star menu - slice raw fish is gone now
come here for salty porridge that is full of ingredients. my go to order is the century egg with chicken. their century egg isn't smelly like other stalls and coming from someone thay doesn't eat century eggs I actually do enjoy theirs. the chicken in the porridge is also really tender which is a nice surprise as usually the chicken ends up being really tough and dry but here it is still deliciously succulent. only complaint is that sometimes the lady adds in too much seasoning into the porridge which makes the whole bowl too salty to the point where it stings my tongue
Very smooth congee done in Cantonese style. The chicken and century egg were abundant. I would have preferred they offered a minced pork version so it is not as lean. The preserved veg and shallots were good accompaniments but from a packet.
Add an egg for $0.50
The service was efficient with the constant crowd.
Variety here is fantastic.
From fish to chicken slices many different variety.
Overall prices are reasonable not too pricey and you will not have a hole in the pocket afterwards.
Most importantly open from early mornings afternoon till late afternoon for tea time as well.
If you are hungry or craving for some good comfort food come down already :)
FYI: porridge was warm and silky, every mouth is tasty:)
